Overview

Two guys, one girl, and two dark secrets that threaten to tear her world apart.

Alice Wright is a young vampire going to high school for the first time at the age of seventeen at the behest of her eccentric mother. In many ways, she's more afraid of the human students than they would be of her.

She feels lost and awkward in human society, but she soon develops a strong bond with the cousin of one of her human classmates, nineteen-year-old Kai. He is beautiful, but somewhat of an enigma. She discovers a dark secret in Kai's life, and she instantly wants to shelter him from the pain that has tormented him all his life.

Then she meets Maksim Augustine, the incredibly gorgeous guy who seems more like he should be a model than a high school student. She is overwhelmingly attracted to him physically, but her love for Kai causes her to continually push him away. Eventually, she discovers a frightening secret about Max, too.

But Max's secret threatens to destroy everything...

    Awful

If you like toread about someone in an emotionally abusive and manipulative relationship and have it played off as "true love" or "romance", this is the book for you. If you're like most people I know who think suicide threats, anger managment issues and a complete lack of emotional control aren't the healthiest things to bring into a relationship and not what you should be basing on being romantically involved with someone are... then don't read this book.

    Very Entertaining

There is something about vampires that is so thrilling, it's no coincidence that the majority of the newer Young Adult books have embraced them to the degree they have. This book, the first in a series, is one of the many that provide an entertaining view into the vampire's relationship with humans in an urban setting.
The story itself is interesting, with various aspects that are new to the vampire genre, changing things up a little from the usual solely-blood-drinkers and night-time-loving bunch. The plot was fast paced and amusing, never allowing the reader to grow bored. Some aspects of the story seem a tad forced, like the two main characters falling so irrevocably and quickly in love. But, it worked for Twilight, so who's to say it doesn't work here?
The characters are really what make the book different. Alice is fun and someone with a strong core, not a whimpering female, which is refreshing. Kai also breaks away from the typical male character. He is vulnerable and weak, yet oddly charming in his way. Max on the other hand, is what we expect, rugged, strong, possessive. A well balanced triangle. Some of their actions, however, are a bit jarring. One moment any two of them are fighting and the next everything is forgiven. I think their reactions sometimes are a bit exaggerated, but it doesn't interfere much with the story itself, just with the believability of them as characters.
All in all, this is a fun beginning to what I'm sure will be an engrossing series. If you like paranormal romances, or just a good, easy read, then this book is perfect for you.

    A wonderful book!

Everyone has secrets, especially vampires who are just trying to live out their lives in a human world as inconspicuously as possible. Alice Wright has been sheltered from the human world for her first seventeen years, but now her mother for some reason wants her to have the same experiences as a human teenager. That means going to high school. Alice is a shy, somewhat awkward girl who discovers that the stereotypes on television became stereotypes for a reason. There are the mean girls in school, there is the one girl who everyone loves to pick on, and there are guys who are absolutely irresistible. Now Alice has to figure out how to react to all of this.

When I decided to start doing reviews for indie authors, I wondered how long it would take to find a book that merited five stars. I wonder no more. Shelter, book one of the Blood Haze series, was an unexpected delight. As one explores the YA paranormal romance genre, it often seems that vampires involved in love triangles has been done to death and most often they are just variations of Twilight, but Tara Shuler is a fresh voice in the genre. Yes, there are vampires. Yup, there's a love triangle. And yes, the word love is bandied about and in some instances makes you wish you could sit Alice down and explain the differences between love, like, sympathy, and attraction.

But isn't that what teenage love is all about? Isn't it a time when you can try love on and spin in front of the mirror to see how it fits? Alice's feelings for Kai are affected by his past and sometimes their interactions are absolutely cringe worthy when looking in from the outside, but it's easy to see how her desperation not to hurt him any more than he already has been makes her look past some of his behavior. Maksim is a different story. He is confident, fun, and stands up for what he believes in and Alice can't help but be drawn to him. But he's not exactly who she thinks he is and if he learns her secret, he could take down her entire family. But would he?

Shelter is a wonderful debut novel from Tara Shuler. The story flows effortlessly and allows the reader to share the ups and downs and the frustrations of the characters. I read the book in one sitting because I didn't want to put it down and with the cliffhanger ending, now I have to read book two! I don't mind in the least.

    Blood Haze: Shelter

If you are a person who enjoys action, romance, and life threatening situations... read this. But you'd better really like romance. It's the major minor (yes i know that is extremely contrasting but whatever) conflict of the book. There really would be no plot without the romance, unfortunately. I will admit, i usually hate romance in novels but this was actually interesting. The book is told in in third limited, so you do get a lot of emotional conflicts from alice. Expect the completely unexpected and lots of slightly annoying drama. I will warn you that there is some language throughout the book... not to my pleasure. Last thing: it ends in a huge cliffhanger! Overall, not a bad read. Recommed for 13 and up.

    A Series to Avoid

This series has a lack of detail, characters that lack insight and depth, and a plot that was meant for toddlers. It us fast paced and leaves you wanting for more, but in a way that makes you want to pull your hair out due to the lack of substance. I would highly recommend not wasting your time or money on the series but if you must, do not expect characters you fall in love with, a decent plot, good romance or a series with a decent setting and description. It is like reading an outline without description or anything that makes a story good. All in all, I dont recommend anyone wasting your time with this. I saw the reviews and thought it would be good or get better and it didn't so do not be fooled. If anything, it truely only gets worse.

I write young adult fantasy/supernatural stories and love to read them. This book fell short of expectations though with the shallow characters, a poor plot, and a weak storyline. There is no explanation as to why Alice starts to go to high school after being home schooled for years. No real connection between Kai and Alice except for a dysfunctional one that is really not all that emotional for the reader, just a bit on the sad needy side. There's no explanation for the relationship the author tries to create between Maksim and Alice or between Alice and Jamie. The mother and brother are in the story but not really a part of it. The story tends on exposition rather than allowing the story to unfold through the characters so instead of being swept through the story I'm told what is happens. There were some minor grammar mistakes that a good editor or cirtique group could have helped the author take care of which all lead to making the story a second rate one. If you want something that is too easy, has no real depth, and borders on condoning anger driven and co-dependent characters then this book is the one for you.

Kai is supposed to be wimpy!

I already reviewed this book but I feel I would be doing a great injustice to future readers of Shelter if I didn't post this extra one concerning Kai. Anyway, to all of you who keep persistently saying what a wimp Kai is and how annoying he is: OF COURSE HE'S A WIMP. HE IS SUPPOSED TO BE WEAK AND CLINGY AND ANNOYING. And wimpy, of course. It's part of his character. He has extreme mega trust issues and with the way his life was before it really isn't too surprising. That's what makes the story the unique story it was. It gives it flavor and really if Kai was as macho and strong and rugged as.Max is I don't believe the story would be as nearly as interesting as it is.

    more from this reviewer

    It was ok

This book was a fast read. It flows along at a smooth but fast past. It definitely was not what I expected at all when I started reading it. I know this is fiction and all but this story was so unbelievable to me. Just hours after the main character Alice meets Kai at a party they are suddenly so in love with each other and are telling each other that they love them. Alice's mom being fine with Kai living with them just after meeting him and not caring that they are sleeping in the same room. I mean really? The first half of the book drove me crazy, especially Kai. He was so obsessed about Alice, calling her constantly and wanting to know what she is doing all the time. I know he has been through a lot in his life but come on. He was overly clingy and in my opinion stalker like. The second half of the book was better and I hope the next books are better. I did like Max, he was not afraid to be who he is. I feel that this story lacked character development and just a good plot. I will read the next book because I want to know what happens. This e-book was provided to me by the author for review. This did not affect my review in any way.

Idk wat to say but click me anyways

Although i do think it was a good book I also gree with the 1- star raters. Okay yes, it did have some grammar errors but does evey book have at least one or two (well, except for encyclopedias and those other over achievers)? The parts mostly agreed on was the explaination (from mr./ms. I write adult fantasy...) and the fact that alice keeps babying kai. I will say this though, i think the author was just trying to get us to understand the fact the kai has come from an abusive/neglective family and after being treated like a certain word for feces that i would care to not repeat he probably finds it difficult to think that anyone could love him. I jut think she was trying to put us in kais shoes thats all. Im mean how would you feel if someone told you you were the cause of everyones problems? I just want to give a shout out to Tara (if youre reading this) you might want to hurry up with the fourth book because reviewer march 1, 2013 doesnt look like he/she can't handle the suspense any longer.
