Overview

A wacky comic fantasy! Join "robust shepherd lad" Lathan as he tries to rescue feisty Princess Purella from the diabolical idol manufacturer Count Zandar the Unfriendly, who is bent on making her the featured sacrifice at the upcoming Society of Idolaters and Necromancers (SIN) Convention! Our hero is "helped" by (among others) the Princess' faithful dog (Arf!); a handsome, yet shallow Prince; and Doctor Oldair, a secular humanist philosopher. Perhaps most valuable to Lathan, however, is the encouragement of his kindly grandmother, who has given him the mysterious coin of "Trollkiller" Sven Svensson, a famous hero who believed in an "invisible God".

Although he loses and gains helpers along the way, Lathan never gives up despite being thrown into a pit of deadly spiders, discouraged by an ancient oracle, captured by a tribe of vicious (yet tasteful) Amazons, and thrown into a mental hospital in the "perfect republic" of El Limo, where "everyone is equal." More than a slapstick parade of clever dwarfs and bumbling heroes, The Shepherd's Adventure ; or A Practical Guide to Princess Rescuing is also a scathing satire of the secular humanism and moral relativism found in Voltaire's Candide, the philosophy which has steadily pervaded and debased modern society.
