Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
These gripping, full-cast radio dramas from the BBC bring to life some of Conan Doyle's most beloved Sherlock Holmes stories, including "A Scandal in Bohemia," "The Red-Headed League," "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," "The Musgrave Ritual," "The Empty House," and "The Dancing Men." In each adaptation, accompanied by music and slick sound effects, Holmes use observation and deduction to discover the truth about strange hieroglyphics, a secret society, a missing photograph, long-lost treasure, and much more. Supported by a host of talented players, Clive Merrison and Michael Williams demonstrate wonderful chemistry as Holmes and Watson. Merrison portrays Holmes as confident, curt, and excitable, while Williams's Watson perfectly captures the diligent, doting assistant. A real treat for Holmes fans, these stories, particularly "The Adventure of the Speckled Band," offer real moments of excitement and even terror. (Oct.)
Publishers Weekly - Audio
Sherlock Holmes and his stalwart companion, Dr. John Watson, are brought to life in six entertaining and thoroughly enjoyable radio dramatizations. Over the course of these classic stories beautifully adapted for radio, Holmes is confronted with mysteries involving the Ku Klux Klan; foreign spies; his arch nemesis, professor James Moriarty; and a murder so hideous that it may be of supernatural design. The listener is pulled into Holmes’s Victorian London through the effective but judicious use of sound effects, e.g., a fire burning in the hearth at 221B Baker Street or the clopping of hooves on cobblestones. The entire cast is first-rate, but it’s Clive Merrison and Michael Williams as Holmes and Watson who make these audio adventures so enjoyable. Their portrayals of the two iconic figures are ably realized, with Merrison bringing a bit more humanity to his interpretation of the Great Detective than is usual, while Williams infuses his Watson with a strength and courage that is often overlooked. Meet the Author

Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was born in Edinburgh and studied medicine. He began writing while he waited for his practice to grow and, with 1887's A Study in Scarlet, created Sherlock Holmes, one of the most famous literary characters of all time. He was a volunteer physician in the Boer War and wrote a book on spiritualism.

Clive Merrison, who plays Holmes, is an English film, television, stage, and radio actor. He is the only actor to have played Holmes in adaptations of every single Conan Doyle short story and novel about the character.
