All Music Guide - Thom Jurek
Those who think they've heard every sound and device in Hans Zimmer's film score bag are in for a surprise with this one for Sherlock Holmes, the 2009 Guy Ritchie film starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. Zimmer has pulled off a score that rivals his finest work, yet sounds like little of it. Here, sounds are as important as instruments, and they often come from organic means -- through these cues we hear the sound of a piano being played on its side, and resembling something between a dusty upright, a children's instrument, and a Wurlitzer -- check the opening cue "Discombobulate." Those who think they've heard every sound and device in Hans Zimmer's film score bag are in for a surprise with this one for Sherlock Holmes, the 2009 Guy Ritchie film starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, and Rachel McAdams. Zimmer has pulled off a score that rivals his finest work, yet sounds like little of it. Here, sounds are as important as instruments, and they often come from organic means -- through these cues we hear the sound of a piano being played on its side, and resembling something between a dusty upright, a children's instrument, and a Wurlitzer -- check the opening cue "Discombobulate." Other classical instruments are used to warped yet humorous effect -- the trombone in "I Never Woke Up in Handcuffs Before" is a stellar example when played against a gypsy violin, an accordion, dumbeks, and other hand percussion. The comically operatic theater mood of "My Mind Rebels at Stagnation" is quirky and dramatic. A sparely plucked banjo enters with the piano to double with the piano before being joined by a full symphony and a gypsy-polka band before shifting the entire piece into an abundantly orchestrated folk-dance tune. All musical roads lead to "Psychological Recovery . . . Six Months," the album's longest track at over 18 minutes. It is in some ways the cut that evokes Zimmer's sense of the dramatic best, and yet even here there are so many twists and turns, it feels more like a suite than a soundtrack cue. As original soundtrack scores go in the 21st century, this is one well worth exploring -- wonderfully weird and full of minor astonishments and generous quirks that will endear it to listeners of many stripes.

Hans Zimmer's "Sherlock Holmes" Is One Awesome Soundtrack

Not two seconds into seeing the movie at the theatre did I realize I had to have this soundtrack. I've been a fan of Hans Zimmer for a while, so I assumed I kind of had him figured out, but this music is so different, not just from his previous work, but from anything. Ever. The music is thrilling --- "Discombobulate" kind of kicks you in the ear, but in a good way --- involving ("Not in Blood But In Bond" is wrought with emotion) and, as is the case with "I Never Woke Up In Handcuffs Before," downright funny. Although each track is insanely different from any of the others in the CD, they all fit together right. Not only is this a superb soundtrack, it is also quite amazing stand-alone music. Do yourself a favour and give a listen. There is a reason it was Oscar-nominated.

An Absolute MUST for Soundtrack Collectors and Avid Music Lovers!!!

I bought this soundtrack because I was captivated by the music when I saw the film. I'm a huge fan of Hans Zimmer and was very please when he received an Academy Award nomination for his original music composition in "Sherlock Holmes." The music is breath-taking, stimulating, and emotional. It's also an enhanced CD that has access to the soundtrack website, instructions for downloading and playing 5.1 surround sound files, and a soundtrack ringtones card that allows you to get ringtones on your cell phone. It's a wonderful CD and I'm happy to add it to my collection of CDs.

This in my opinion is some of the greatest music by Hans Zimmer I've ever heard!

It is powerful, it really fits the tone of the movie and is just an incredible soundtrack. I would recommend any fav of the 2009 or fan of Hans Zimmer in general buy this soundtrack NOW! xP

    Not 5.1

The CD promises a download of a 5.1 Surround Sound digital version. The provided version is actually just a 2 channel PCM, which you are encouraged to play under Dolby PL II - just as you can with any CD... Disappointment.

    Amazing soundtrack.

It is no surprise that this album has been nominated for an award. Upon hearing the full album I was amazed at how many ways one can pair several different instruments with a violin and still get the same effect. This album is worth every penny definitely. If you need your Sherlock Holmes movie fix without going to the theaters to see it again this is definitely the answer.
