Meet the Author

Joshua Hammer grew up in New York City, attended Princeton University, and spent 15 years a foreign correspondent and Bureau Chief for Newsweek magazine, based, successively, in Nairobi, Buenos Aires, Los Angeles, Berlin, Jerusalem, and Cape Town. A Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in 2004-2005, Hammer left Newsweek the following year and became a freelance writer, based in Berlin. He is a contributing writer and editor for Smithsonian magazine, and a contributing editor for Outside, and writes regularly for The New York Review of Books, The New York Times, Conde Nast Traveler, Fast Company, the Atlantic Monthly, and other publications. He is the author of three books, including Chosen by God: A Brother’s Journey, a finalist for the 2000 Los Angeles Times Book Prize; A Season in Bethlehem: Unholy War in a Sacred Place; and Yokohama Burning: The Deadly 1923 Earthquake and Fire that helped Blaze the Path to World War II.
