From the Publisher

“She's All That! Poems About Girls, edited by Belinda Hollyer, illus. by Susan Hellard, includes more than 80 poems from Gertrude Stein, Eloise Greenfield and Jean Little to Roald Dahl and Jack Prelutsky. Many are funny, others sad (e.g., Judith Viorst's "Since Hanna Moved Away"), but all convey something that girls can recognize from their own experiences. A magenta ribbon lets readers keep their place.” —Publishers Weekly

“Too few children read really good poetry; this book is a wonderful introduction to a wide variety of poems and issues to which every young girl can relate.” —Children's Literature

“This title delivers timely and accessible poems that will speak to modern readers.” —School Library Journal

Children's Literature
Pre-teen and early teen girls typically have a lot of confusing thoughts and events in their lives. Belinda Hollyer has selected a wide variety of poems that address many of the issues that young girls confront. "Mirror, Mirror," "Best Friends," "I Remember You," and "Full of Zest" are some of the categories into which the poems are sorted. The poems range from funny to touching to gritty, but all of them are full of energy and feeling. The poets include those typically read by children (Roald Dahl) to the more adult, but still appropriate poets (Maya Angelou and Gertrude Stein, among others). Susan Hellard's black-and-white illustrations accent the poems without detracting from them, almost like doodles. There is not only an index of the poets, but also an index of first lines. Too few children read really good poetry; this book is a wonderful introduction to a wide variety of poems and issues to which every young girl can relate. 2006, Kingfisher/Houghton Mifflin, Ages 9 to 11.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-7-There is a fine line between clich and empowerment when it comes to anything that shouts "girl power." This anthology walks that line somewhat awkwardly at times, but ultimately with grace. The poems, penned by famous poets and children's book authors, move from topics of racial identity and body image to love and sports. Lee Bennett Hopkins, Gertrude Stein, Roald Dahl, Russell Hoban, Douglas Florian, and Judith Viorst are among those included. The full-page and spot-art line drawings adorn the pages as doodles might decorate a journal. While they are likely to appeal to the intended audience, they occasionally detract from the seriousness and fine craftsmanship of a particular poem. This title delivers timely and accessible poems that will speak to modern readers.-Jill Heritage Maza, Conn Elementary, Raleigh, NC Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
