Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 5-8–Fans of the “Percy Jackson and the Olympians” series (Hyperion) will enjoy this witty assortment of profiles from Greek mythology. Each work begins with a quick description of the meaning and purpose of mythology as well as its current allusions from Valentine’s Day to Nike shoes. Then, readers are introduced to the wondrous array of monsters, mortals, gods, beasts, heroes, and goddesses, ranging from Aphrodite to Zeus, in four to six informative pages each. Features include a one-column resumé that lists “Divine Powers,” “Attributes,” and “Top 10 Things to Know about Me” for each subject and a running footer that encapsulates his or her “Family, Flings, Friends, and Foes.” Eye-catching fonts and full-color reproductions and cartoon illustrations accompany the fascinating descriptions and provide an excellent framework for understanding the Greek pantheon. While some of the jokes take corny to a new level, these books are guaranteed to garner the attention of mythophiles.
Children's Literature - Tiffany Torbeck
The popular "Percy Jackson and the Olympians" series by Rick Riordan has generated an increase in interest in Greek mythology. Even when Greek mythology is not so brightly in the limelight, teachers need a way to make this very complicated subject accessible to children. This volume looks specifically at the women of classical mythology. It is easily browsable. Not only are major goddesses profiled, but also many important mortals, nymphs and Titans can also be found in the book's pages. All of these characters are allotted a fact sheet plus notable stories which are organized alphabetically by name. This volume includes a table of contents for easy reference, and it also contains an index, a family tree, a glossary, and a map of the night sky. There are many references to pop culture, as well as texting and instant messaging abbreviations that might unnecessarily age this book, but these features make the book that much more relevant to young readers today. This a great book for teaching kids about Greek Mythology

I thought this book would be like all the other Greek mythology books I have read. I was wrong. As I read, I was laughing at the funny illustrations and text! I think this is a very educational book!
