All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
One of the great new wave/early MTV records, She's So Unusual is a giddy mix of self-confidence, effervescent popcraft, unabashed sentimentality, subversiveness, and clever humor. In short, it's a multifaceted portrait of a multifaceted talent, an artist that's far more clever than her thin, deliberately girly voice would indicate. Then again, Lauper's voice suits her musical persona, since its chirpiness adds depth, or reconfigures the songs, whether it's the call to arms of "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" or the tearjerking "Time After Time." Lauper is at her very best on the first side, all of which were singles or received airplay, and this collection of songs...

Lauper is at her very best on the first side, all of which were singles or received airplay, and this collection of songs -- "Money Changes Everything," "Girls," "When You Were Mine," "Time," "She Bop," "All Through the Night" -- is astonishing in its consistency, so strong that it makes the remaining tracks -- all enjoyable, but rather pedestrian -- charming by their association with songs so brilliantly alive. If Lauper couldn't maintain this level of consistency, it's because this captured her persona better than anyone could imagine -- when a debut captures a personality so well, let alone a personality so tied to its time, the successive work can't help but pale in comparison. Still, when it's captured as brightly and brilliantly as it is here, it does result in a debut that retains its potency, long after its production seems a little dated. [The 2000 reissue contains three live bonus tracks, all enjoyable, all not really necessary.]

Still Unusual After All These Years

It's important to remember that when Cyndi Lauper recorded "She's So Unusual" in 1983, her first band, Blue Angel, had broken up and she filed for bankruptcy. For the most part, the Queens, New York native with the Edith Bunker-cum-Betty Boop voice was looked upon as laughable. When this record did come out, people realized that her incredible, five-octave voice was nothing to laugh at. And then, there was the thrift-store chic that seperated her from the Madonna crowd. Then again, her first great single, "Girls Just Want To Have Fun", would make her a timeless feministic hero, just the same. Her choice for material was also impeccable, particularly "Money Changes Everything" (by The Brains) and "When U Were Mine" (by Prince). The additional material features live cuts, including her then-controversial hit, "She Bop" (about masturbation), which only proves that her talent wasn't a flukey thing. Twenty-five years later, Cyndi still has the chops, even if she doesn't have the multi-colored hair and Screaming Mini clothing anymore. Anyone who thinks that Katy Perry is a strange duck should listen to this.

    Excellent First Album

This is a very interesting album, and shows various sides of her personality. There are more serious songs ("When You Were Mine" , "All Through the Night") playful songs ("Girls Just Want to Have Fun","Yeah, Yeah") and in general a good mix of upbeat songs and ballads. She has an unusual and expressive voice, and her lyrics tend toward being more strong and independant. One of my favorite songs by her now is "When You Were Mine", and I also find that I am more interested the second side of the album now, partly because they contain more songs that were not overplayed on the radio. This is an excellent introduction to Cyndi, and shows why she was so popular.

    unusual

cyndi is a goddess. She is a breakthrough artist by being one of the first females to sing about something other than their dependcy on males. Her 'girls just wanna have fun' is widely known and sums up what she stands for. Being a 15 year old in 2001, I love her
