That she undertook the trip alone--in an ice storm, no less--that she had to hitch a ride in the first place illustrated, in Nat's mind, a magnificent intent that she had always found missing in herself, until now.
Bet on the long shot, back the underdog, because you never know when the loser will be you.
Nat was suddenly jealous of Arizona Tyler and Trina. It was serious business, this love of theirs. The way love should be. Instinctive. Visceral. Innate. Nat had never loved like that, and this thought brought regret first and then hope for the trip north.
"So," Trina asked, "what's your story?"
"Oh, you know..." She started to stay "the usual" but caught herself and instead just said, "...road trip," as if that phrase, out of context, actually meant something.
"Uh-huh." Trina smiled and nodded. "Where you goin'?"
"North Dakota," Nat replied.
Trina gaped at her. "On purpose?"
