Overview

"Heart-pounding suspense and an inventive twist of science fiction" - SciFiChick

A serial killer with multiple personalities. An astronaut who returns from higher dimensional space a changed man. And two unlikely detectives who have to get inside the mind of a killer ... literally. That's Shift - an eleven-dimensional murder mystery with a touch of out-of-body horror.

Astronaut John Bruce was the first man to pilot a ship through higher dimensional space. Two years after his triumphant return, a second John Bruce appears - as a new personality of Peter Pendennis, an imprisoned serial killer with multiple personalities. The doctors think it's another of Peter's tricks ... until he asks to see Louise Callander, the astronaut's former girlfriend, and reveals things only the real John Bruce could know.

Hyperpsychologist Nick Stubbs is brought in to investigate. According to the latest research, the mind doesn't just inhabit the physical three-dimensional world. It projects into the higher dimensions, and if Bruce's brain had been inadequately shielded when he'd entered higher dimensional space...

Could a part of his personality have been torn away? And somehow attached itself to a new host? Nick's initial scans of Pendennis's brain are unlike anything he's ever seen, but before he can continue, the killings start. Soon Nick and Louise are on the run, from the police, and the killer, but how can they evade a murderer who appears to be able to walk through walls?

Nick knows of one way. It's dangerous, it's experimental, and - in every sense of the word - mind-blowing.

Plus there's an added problem. Astronaut John Bruce - or is it Mr. Hyde? - just happens to be running for President.

REVIEWS:

"Shift is an exciting and shocking futuristic thriller. The characters are original, and the imagery pulls you in. Incorporating heart-pounding suspense and an inventive twist of science fiction, I enjoyed this story even more than Dolley's Resonance. This is another author I'll definitely be watching." SciFiChick

"SHIFT is a great science fiction mystery that will have the audience wondering who the killer is. The story line is fast-paced but brilliantly driven by the strong cast ... Chris Dolley mesmerizes his audience." Alternative Worlds

"I think I somehow missed reading Dolley's first novel, Resonance, when it appeared a couple of years ago. It's an oversight that I plan to correct in the near future because his second is a very accomplished, intricate, and entertaining novel. There's lots of neat stuff in this, and the plot is clever and full of surprises. It's first class writing from someone whose name will, I predict, be much better known before long." Don D'Ammassa, Critical Mass

"Shift is a really good science fiction story. I'd recommend it to anyone who wants something a bit different in their science fiction." SF Signal

Meet the Author

Chris Dolley was born in Bournemouth, England on September 30th, 1954. Several attempts to educate him were made by staff at Winton and Moordown, Bournemouth School and, finally, Plymouth Polytechnic. But he was too fast, graduating at the age of 20 with an honours degree in Geography. In 1974 he formed the Free Cornish Army, who declared Cornwall an independent nation. The humor Punch called the affair a ?splendid hoax.? After 13 years as a computer programmer for the Home Office, he founded Randomberry Games in 1981, probably the first UK computer game company. In 1995, Chris moved to France, and he and his wife now live on a farm he has renovated in the Normandy-Maine Regional Park. In between the plumbing and roofing at his new home, he appeared in the films Joan of Arc and Sade, though his role in the former ended up on the cutting room floor (he hopefully awaits the Director's Cut). His mystery novel An Unsafe Pair of Hands was short listed for the Sara Ann Freed Memorial Award for best first mystery. His first novel for Baen was Resonance.

Astronaut scientist John Bruce discovered the means to travel through extra-dimensional space. While testing his new ship design, he insisted he had a religious inspirational experience. Considered a hero and extremely popular amongst his fellow Americans, John runs for President.------------ Convicted serial killer Peter Pendennis has been locked away ever since he was convicted of and slicing and dicing eleven victims. Psychiatrists working with Peter conclude he suffers from multiple personalities. However, shockingly one of his egos claims to be astronaut John Bruce. To prove his claim Peter informs Bruce¿s former girlfriend Louise Callander things that only the real astronaut and she are aware of. Studying the impact of multiple dimensions on the brain, research scientist Nick Stubbs interviews Peter in his Bruce persona. At the same time someone is killing people using the dissecting M.O. of the incarcerated Pendennis the prime suspect is Nick.----------- SHIFT is a great science fiction mystery that will have the audience wondering who the killer is. The story line is fast-paced but brilliantly driven by the strong cast as each key player is fully developed to include several of the Pendennis personalities. RESONANCE is exciting and the strong characters are totally believable. Chris Dolley mesmerizes his audience.------- Harriet Klausner
