Shifter's Claim, Part I, A.C. Arthur Review from jeannie zelos b

    Shifter's Claim, Part I, A.C. Arthur
Review from jeannie zelos book reviews
So, I'm not usually a fan of serial novels, I'm far too impatient to wait months between episodes, but this one is in four parts released a week apart, and the whole novel also released with final episode. Even I can deal with a wait like that!
Anyway part one introduces us to the background to the shifters, and to the main characters of Bas and Priya. Bas as a shifter works to ensure that their species is kept a secret, and is a leading part of a faction that weeds out rogues who could let their existence be known. Priya is a reporter, who'se seen things she shouldn't and has strong outside reasons for her persistence in investigating the shifters. She simply doesn't have the choice not to do it. There's an attraction between Bas and Priya right from their first meeting, but of course that's the worst thing to happen, they really are on opposite sides with Bas determined not to let the secret out, and to stop by any means those who risk it and Priya, a tenacious reporter who has some scary reasons to get to the truth and make it known....Then of course there's Bas determination after a past tragedy never to get involved with a human again – his cat though seems to have other ideas..What happens next?
Well, its a fun read so far, with their attraction, the speices secret existence, the feudal hierarchy that seems to dominate most supernatual books, and the danger of other illegal things the shifters have to deal with, that risks breaking their cover. Currently that seems to be rogues involved in a massive drug smuggling operation that could turn out to be even bigger than expected. It's got all the elements I love, strong characters, sensual and spicy romantic angle, likable heroine, pressure from outside sources and an element of danger. Potential for some great drama and emotion.
It's around 100 pages I'd guess from reading time, so a decent length for a part novel, and if all parts are this length that means I can hope for a proeprly filled story, not one where elemets are rushed but space allowed for the whole story. I can hope anyway :-)
Stars: hard to judge on just part of a book but I'm going for a Four.
