Shifty's War is a tale of a soldier's blood-filled days fighting his way from the shores of France to the heartland of Germany, and the epic story of how one man's abilities as a sharpshooter, along with an engagingly unassuming personality, propelled him to a life greater than he could have ever imagined.

Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Darrell "Shifty" Powers (1923-2009) was a machinist who was born, grew up, lived, worked, and died in a small Virginia mining town. Except for his service as a U.S. Army sharpshooter during World War II, this mild-mannered good neighbor saw very little of the rest of the world. In fact, he would have died relatively unknown had it not been for two major events: the 1992 publication of Stephen Ambrose's Band of Brothers and the 2001 ten-part HBO mini-series based on the book. Powers' heroics are featured in both accounts, but this authorized biography by A Company of Heroes author Marcus Brotherton presents his wartime service in Europe as "Shifty" himself experienced it. A quite extraordinary "ordinary soldier."

    Highly Recommended

Great Book. Excellent. I can not describe in words how good this book is. This is a book that you can not put down. I started reading it and just could not stop reading. I have seen Band of Brothers and read a lot of books concerning Easy Company and this is the only book that made me cry. Shifty will be greatly missed by everyone. He was a wonderful person and a great soldier.
I am still looking for other memoirs concerning Easy Company.
