Overview

In these tales of hope and loss, lovers and found family, Lori L. Lake has once more given us an amazing slice of life. A frightened woman stumbles through her daily existence, unsure of her place in the world, until she comes into possession of a magic coat… Tee has a problem with her temper, and now that she’s being tested again, will she fail to curb it again? Kaye Brock has recently been released from prison and doesn’t have a single friend – until Mrs. Gildecott comes along…

These women and many others, unsettled and adrift and often disillusioned, can’t quite understand how they arrived at their present situations. But whether rejected, afraid to commit, or just misunderstood, even the most hard-bitten are not without some hope in the power of love.

Lori L. Lake’s talent shines like never before in this collection of glittering tales. Sharply rendered, the tone of these stories reflects their title: silver and gray, shimmery and wintry, yet also filled with the shiny hope of summer. These are stories that bear rereading.

Editorial Reviews

K Isserman - Curve Magazine
[These] five brilliant fictional tales that are varied in plot but connected by a common theme. They exemplify the grit and adversity of real life with topics ranging from sexual harassment to surviving breast cancer. The title story, “Shimmer,” is set during the 1969 Stonewall riots... There is a lot of heart packed into the pages of this book, but the collection sends us a clear message: We can choose the path our lives take.
Lesbian Review - Ann Bannon
In these artfully written stories, many of the characters who thought they had given up on happiness find it coming at them from the least likely corners of their world. Lake has a flawless ear for the witty twists of the English language and a fine grasp of popular culture. She fearlessly situates her characters in a range of places, times, and dilemmas that might daunt a less gifted and confident author. Readers can relax, knowing they will be carried along by a born story teller.
Nann Dunne - Just About Write .com
In Shimmer and Other Stories, Lori L. Lake serves up a tempting array of treats as her outstanding characters experience the sweetness of true soulmates in Another Stage; handle the sourness of a reproachful town in Paige; admire the tartness of an old lady’s gumption in Take Me Out; savor the tastiness of unsuspected friends in Tsuki, Tsuki; and overthrow the bitterness of discrimination in Shimmer. Sample these delightful morsels. Lake has laid out a feast.
Lee Lynch - Lesbian Review
Lake has created distinctive and memorable characters in settings that will linger with readers long after the stories come to their satisfying and hopeful conclusions. Here are five compelling tales of outsiders: women ex-offenders, lesbians, cancer survivors alone with their altered bodies. All bump up against the harsh real world and find salvation in surprising ways, from the supernatural to a former nemesis turned guardian angel.

    Dynamite Book!

Can you go wrong with a book that has its foreward written by the fantastic Ann Bannon? Simply and emphatically stated¿you can¿t. Though containing only five short stories, Shimmer is a book where each page is impactful in telling its tale. Tales told with lessons to be learned: such as hard choices faced in Take Me Out unlikely support against prejudice in Tsuki, Tsuki love lost and love found in Another Stage heartbreak and tragedy in Paige and a reminder brought home of the age old saying ¿be careful what you wish for¿ in Shimmer. Whether penning books filled with short stories such as Shimmer & Other Stories and Stepping Out: Short Stories contributing both her editing and writing skills to the dynamic anthology, Romance for Life or full-length novels: Ricochet in Time, Different Dress, Gun Shy, Under the Gun, Have Gun, We¿ll Travel and the dramatic Snow Moon Rising, an excerpt of which is placed in the last few pages of Shimmer to delight and intrigue the reading audience, Lori L. Lake has proven time and again she is a master in weaving together words with both skill and finesse.
