Overview

Emmie Talbot is a quintessential good girl.
Smart, Southern, Kind
Church Goer
Small Town Seamstress
Aspiring Teacher
And
A Misguided Moonshiner

Emmie's sole purpose in life was taking care of her moonshine loving step-father. When he is killed in a fiery crash on their farm, she is left alone and frustrated with a mountain of debt. Working as a seamstress for a crazy-old-coot shopkeeper is not the kind of life she had imagined for herself.

The curious events that surround her step-father's death send Emmie on a quest for answers. Answers that lead to a dangerous secret tucked away on her property. Stumbling on a moonshine still was an unfortunate event for most folks in the hills of Kentucky. She was lucky not to have been shot on the spot. Emmie saw hope in the steam escaping the curved copper pipe of "Ole Maizy". However, a series of mishaps put her front and center in a local moonshine war.

In the midst of chaos, Emmie is befriended by an attorney recently transported from Chicago. Silas McDowell is a man seeking some answers of his own. In an attempt to find a little roaring twenties glamour in the small town, he introduces Emmie to the underground world of Speakeasies and Blind Pigs. Loyalty, lies, and murder conspire to push Silas and Emmie together or rip them apart. Cloaked in secrets and unsure whom to trust, Emmie must decide to drown in darkness or find a way to Shine On.

Meet the Author

Allison Jewell lives in southern Kentucky with her husband, two sons, and dog. When she isn't hard at work on her next novel, she can be found doing one of her favorite things: watching her older son chase the puck at the local hockey rink, secretly eating her mother's homemade brownies, hanging out at home listening to records with her husband, or making up silly songs with her younger son. Before becoming a stay-at-home mom and writer, Allison worked as an elementary school teacher and education consultant.

Allison is author of the Shine On series. Shine On released in May of 2013, followed her latest book, Rise and Shine. She is currently writing the third book in the series, Come Rain or Shine.

    Mystery/romance 260 pages

This mystery/ romance was set in 1928. It has about 260 pages long. There were a few editing problems, but nothing major. I enjoyed reading the details of what life was like during this era. I knew about Speak Easies, but had never heard or read about Blind Pigs before. There is quite a bit of graphic violence and cursing in this book. There is a good flow to the story. I am so grateful for the freedoms women have today, when compared to those of almost 90 years ago, as dipicted in this novel. This is a book for adult readers.

Jewell did an amazing job capturing the audience's attention fro

Jewell did an amazing job capturing the audience's attention from the first to the very last sentence of Shine On. There is a perfect balance of a budding romance, raw emotions, and drama. Ladies will be swooning over Silas McDowell :) It is evident that Jewell did her research prior to completing her first novel set in the 1920'
    s. This meticulous fact reveals that we have an authentic, talented, and dedicated author on our hands! Although there is mild cursing, a little violence, and a few editing issues, it is nothing that cannot be overlooked for a great read. Look out Hallmark and Lifetime, I see a movie in the future! Beautiful start to the Shine On romance series!

This was a page-turner;  however , there are some major editing problems.
Many words are left out , the wrong word is used, or a word ending is left off.  One example
of a problem is the saying "it is what it is".  That is a 21st century saying.  Emmie was "pilfering" through her drawers.
Pilfering is small time theft, not rummaging through your own drawers..
Despite these distractions, I enjoyed the plot and am curious to know how Emmie and Silas can possibly stay together.

    Excellent read

Although there are are lots of characters i still had a hard time putting it down. The time era made it even more interesting. The relationships that materialuzed were very intense but purposeful. This would make a great movie.
