Shine [UTV]

All Music Guide - Hal Horowitz
Subtitled "Vol. 1," this is the first in a proposed series of Shine! albums to focus on "new and edgy alternative acts," as the press release states. Not surprisingly, 12 of the disc's 18 selections -- all from different artists and dating from 1996 through 1999 -- derive from releases under the enormous Universal umbrella of labels. But, since that encompasses such a wide assortment of music, there's no shortage of solid selections here, all of which easily fall into the rather loose concept unifying these songs. Only a few of the tracks are from established singers, and even their choices are relatively offbeat. Things get off to a rousing start with Blur's instantly ...

Things get off to a rousing start with Blur's instantly catchy "Wha-HOO!" "Song 2." Continuing in the recognizable name column, Moby's hard-edged, funky "Bodyrock," Sublime's sunny, reggaefied "Santeria," Days of the New's "Touch, Peel and Stand," and Garbage's pure pop "Special" are good examples of hook-heavy, radio-ready, alternative rock prickly enough to appeal to fringe music aficionados yet cross over to a wider audience, although Shirley Manson and her boys hover perilously close to mainstream. Acts bubbling under in 2000 like Supergrass, Oleander, Jimmy's Chicken Shack, Stroke 9, and Underworld have established alt-credibility, and even though their tracks aren't major hits, they are representative of the genre. Besides Garbage, Tracey Bonham "Behind Every Good Woman", Leona Ness, and Republica with 1996's "Ready to Go," one of the album's oldest cuts ably represent the female end of melodic alt-rock. In the "never heard of 'em before" category is Collapsis, Pound, and Primer 55, all of who turn in strong performances of their most concise, singalong tunes. Sort of a sample hour of a groovy, non-existent, contemporary radio station without the intrusive DJs or commercials, Shine! is a consistently enjoyable sampler. Even though it's bereft of liner notes or individual personnel listings, it's an intriguing and representative collection of ear-catching late-'90s, commercial alternative music.
