Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Traci Avalos
This fantastic collection of encouraging stories illustrates the lives of teenagers and how they are able to move on from many different difficult situations. These stories range in seriousness from a cheerleader's breakup with her boyfriend to the traumatic death of a sister, but all share the common theme of working through life's hardships. The wide range of attitudes and situations illustrated by these stories will hook a myriad of readers. I really enjoyed the variety of different young voices throughout the collection, as well as the British culture that appeared in many. This book would be great to use in the classroom to illustrate narrative voice, particularly as it relates to the Six Traits or to compare and contrast reactions of different characters. It would also work well as a miniature Literature Circle model, with each group getting a different story that shares a common theme. The stories are short enough to be read aloud to the class, and many of the authors have other high-interest books students can go to for further reading. Featured authors include Anne Fine, Meg Cabot, Lois Lowry, Jacqueline Wilson, Melvin Burgess, and others.
KLIATT - Joanna Solomon
This concise collection of 11 short stories centers on the theme of growing up. More specifically, the characters deal (or don't deal) with major obstacles or hardships that teens often face. Some are more universal than others—coming out as gay, parents divorcing. Other issues are entirely unique, such as dealing with synesthesia and blindness all at once, or dealing with moving to a real haunted house. Notable authors contributed to this collection, including Meg Cabot, Melvin Burgess, Meg Rosoff, and Lois Lowry, who provides an introduction articulating the coming-of-age theme. All the authors know teen troubles intimately, which comes across in their writing. The stories are brief, which makes for a fast and enjoyable read. In many cases, though, the stories cut off before a complete resolution. They tend to present the common theme and issues, and the reader gets a chance to relate, but they would serve their purpose better if given the chance to continue fully.
Kirkus Reviews
This collection of 11 stories by different authors contains tales of teens making their way through some sort of challenge and getting to the other side with new knowledge and maturity. Most of the stories are written in first person, adding a sense of immediacy. Anne Fine tells the moving story of a teenage boy who finally and somewhat accidentally lets his mom know that he's gay. In "You're a Legend," by Sue Limb, a girl searching for a unique "look" for herself is shocked to find that her "sad old" gran was actually quite a character in her youth and has fascinating stories to tell. Celia Rees's creepy "Calling the Cats" has a female protagonist who must find a way to bring peace to a family of ghostly children who have more sinister intentions for the living girl. "Skin Deep," by Rosie Rushton, relays the heartbreaking yet hopeful tale of a girl whose face and body are permanently scarred by a bomb. Each tale is different, but all describe the ability of teens to get through rough patches and find their own way to shine. The variety, notion of durability and capability for making the best of situations makes for a thought-provoking read. (Short stories. 12-15)
