Matt is captain of them all until -- avast! His mother comes to vacuum the rug. What happens then will delight and astonish young children who, like Matt, can imagine a couch pillow as a smokestack, a cardboard tube as a paddle, and a vacuum cleaner as the legendary monster of the deep! A child on a sofa imagines it turning into a succession of ships, culminating in an encounter with a sea monster.

Editorial Reviews

Horn Book
(Preschool)
On the left pages of this wordless book, drawn in a thick blue outline, a boy sits on a couch with a few boxes, a stick, some tubes, and a piece of cloth. A heavy border surrounds each picture. On the right pages, the same boy and couch are drawn in more detail with pen and blue watercolor, free-flowing without a border. With each page turn, the left-hand page shows what is happening in the real world as the boy arranges his props on the couch. On the right, we see his fantasy world as the couch becomes an inflatable raft, a canoe, a sailboat, a submarine, and a steamship. Soon, a vacuum cleaner (with a mother attached) invades the left page while a gate-fold spread shows an angry green sea monster-with a mouth shaped like the sucking end of a vacuum. Finally, with the vacuum turned off and the monster asleep, mother and child sit on the floor to read a book about boats. The heavy paper, square format, and limited palette suggest that this book is a companion to Fire Truck (rev. 9/98) and Trucks Trucks Trucks (rev. 5/99), Sïs's recent books for toddlers. But the content implies a slightly older audience: three- or four-year-olds who engage in intricate, extended imaginary play. This deceptively simple book, placed in the right hands, should find the audience worthy of its huge appeal. lolly robinson

A couch metamorphoses into a series of seaworthy vessels as a boy imagines himself sailing over the waters of a small blue rug. Much of the charm of this wordless, nearly monochromatic book lies in the play between the similarities and differences in the two illustrations on each spread. On the left, the boy sits on the couch with various props, positioned to suggest the oar of a canoe, the mast of a sailing ship or the periscope of a submarine. The right shows the imagined scene as the boy steers a raft or commands a huge ocean liner. While the left-hand scene is rendered with dark, broad lines (so broad that it's hard to tell exactly what the boy's props are), the imagined scene is more finely drawn and modulated with blue watercolor wash. The vessels become more elaborate as the boy's fantasy life confidently expands, until the sudden appearance of a huge colorful sea monster (in a three-panel fold-out spread) dwarfs him on a vulnerable raft. The monster turns out to be his mother's vacuum cleaner, and in the final image, mother and son read about boats while sitting on the rug--now just a rug. Tender and inviting, this well-conceived book speaks to kids' twin needs for familiarity and adventure. Ages 3-up. (Sept.) Copyright 1999 Cahners Business Information.

PreS-K This wordless picture book follows a small boy's imaginings as the couch he sits on transforms into a variety of vessels. The child wears a Native American headdress as he paddles a canoe; a baseball cap as he rigs the sail on a sailboat; a captain's hat on an ocean liner; a pirate's scarf as he steers the tiller of a pirate ship, and so on. Suddenly, a huge sea monster becomes visible, harbored in a foldout. On the next page, Mom appears and she and the boy rest safely on a raft as the creature dozes. The drawings are limned in shades of blue and green encircled by lots of clean, white space. The result is a charmingly simple, entrancing book. Kirkus Reviews
In a third book that links the imagination of a small child with the toy vehicles in his possession, Sís (Trucks, Trucks, Trucks, p. 538, etc.) puts realistic scenes of a child on the lefthand pages, and the scenes the child envisions on right. On one page, a boy sits on a sofa with a couple of boxes and a couple of poles and a small blanket. A blue scatter rug is on the floor. Opposite that scene is the same boy, but now the sofa is in a state of transformation. Gradually, through the pages, it is first an amorphous conveyance, then an inflatable, a canoe, a sailboat, a junk, until it becomes a great liner. The little rug, of course, becomes the sea. The pages march correspondingly along, with the boy arranging the boxes and poles into his vessel of choice. A fold-out page reveals a terrific sea monster, but a mother appears, too, with her vacuum cleaner, bringing boy and readers back to shore. Sís is at his simple best, using broad lines to depict reality, and then the spidery, dot-dash penwork to shape his fantasy world; he and children speak the same language to weave their dreams.
