How can Dane defeat an enemy that's already dead?

Dane the Defiant is determined to free his beloved Astrid from her Valkyrie servitude. And he learns of a way—a dark and dangerous way. He must hunt and kill a savage foe: none other than his former nemesis, Thidrek the Terrifying, who has magically returned from the dead.

Thidrek has been sent by the goddess Hel herself, ruler of the Underworld, to find the Ship of the Dead, a cursed vessel built from the bone and sinew of countless ill-fated sailors. If Dane and his fellow Rune Warriors fail to find the ship first, Thidrek will use it to lead Hel's ghastly army of dead, decayed soldiers in a violent overthrow of mankind.

Can Dane find a way to save the world—and reunite with his one true love—in the face of indomitable evil? The fate of the Viking world hangs in the balance in this exhilarating final chapter of the epic RuneWarriors saga.

Editorial Reviews

The Horn Book
PRAISE for RUNEWARRIORS: SWORD OF DOOM“Rip-roaring adventure. Dane’s quest for revenge and his romance with Astrid, Mistress of the Blade, provide a nice balance to the gross-out humor, and the resulting tale is at once funny and thrilling. An excellent next step for fans of Percy Jackson.”
Children's Literature - Patricia Williamson
This is the third in a series by Jennewein and Parker about Dane the Defiant. He is on a quest to free his love Astrid from her enslavement through an oath to Odin. Dane's nemisis, Thedrek the Terrible, has been sentenced to the underworld but in the prologue of the book is allowed to leave if he brings her the Ship of the Dead. Dane realizes that the only way he and Astrid can be together is to die and be taken to Valhalla, but he must die courageously. Astrid and Mist, her close companion, decide to steal a human's blade to kill Thedrek and end up stealing Dane's blade. He catches them and then it is revealed that the whole thing was set up by Aurora, who according to Astrid, murdered Mist and herself. With all of this revealed, it is discovered that Thedrek is working for the Underworld and plans to steal the Ship of the Dead. Dane, assisted by his fellow Rune Warriors, sets out to keep that from happening in exchange for Astrid's freedom to return to earth. William, one of Dane's companions is captured by Thedrek as a hostage for negotiation purposes. In the end, the ship is saved, Astrid is offered her freedom and must make a choice to stay in the paradise she currently lives in or go to earth to grow old and forget with Dane. Ultimately love wins over all and she decides to live out her life on earth. Dane is visited by dreams that reveal his friends and loved ones so he knows all are safe and prosperous. Kirkus Reviews

Thidreck the Terrifying, killed by Dane the Defiant, is back in action on an errand for the goddess Hel to find the Ship of Doom. The ultimate objective for this task is world domination for Hel, and the reward for Thidreck is restoration to life and human status. After Dane steals the Book of Fate, the irate Norn Skuld promises to give Astrid the right to choose release from her oath as a ValkyrieifDane destroys the Ship of Doom and removes Thidreck from the picture permanently. Dane and his boon companions set off in their usual hilarious and quarrelsome manner to save the world. The plot and subplots are handled with masterly finesse: Action and suspense are nonstop. Although the climax requires strong suspension of disbelief, the resolution will satisfy fans completely. Familiarity with the first two RuneWarriors books (Shield of Odin, 2008;Sword of Doom, 2009) will aid readers through the twists and turns. Established fans will devour this excellent series finish.(Fantasy. 11-14)
