Thus opens The Ship of Widows, the story of five women brought together in a large communal apartment by the vagaries of war in the year 1943. The narrative traces the ebb and flow of their relationships and the changes wrought in their lives by the birth of a son to one of the women. Grekova conveys vividly not only the decisive differences between the postwar generation and those who participated in the defense of their country, but also the extraordinary capacity of human nature to endure and overcome seemingly unendurable suffering and deprivation. Above all, this text spotlights female experiences of the war: the fate of those who did not engage in battle at the front, but fought just as desperately to survive starvation, cold, and exhaustion, to maintain homes and, in a sense, a country to which soldiers could return. Ship of Widows provides a cultural key to an understudied period of Russia's history and an understudied segment of its population - women. This new paperback edition includes an illuminating foreword by Helena Goscilo.

Moving, even haunting at times, The Ship of Widows follows the lives of five disparate Soviet women who are brought together by WW II. Sharing a shabby Moscow apartment, they endure a lack of privacy as each one struggles to survive in an increasingly bureaucratic system. Told from the shifting narrative perspective of two of the women, Olga Ivanovna and Anfisa Gromova, the story works best when it explores the quotidian: the arduous quests for food, work, adequate medical care, dignity. The author, a Russian mathematician, is skillful at conveying in unadorned yet effective prose the tensions between these women, which arise from class and cultural differences. Olga is ``a bit of an intellectual,'' Anfisa and the fitter Panka are working class; Kapa, a religious peasant; and Ada, a former operetta singer despised for her ``parasitism.'' Grekova, though, is not much given to insight, and her characters, who veer dangerously close to stereotype and melodrama, remain static throughout. The men in particular, like Anfisa's husband and son, are alternately indifferent and brutish; unfortunately the petulant son dominates the last half of the story and turns it into a tale of redemption. Readers will better appreciate this ably translated novel as a historical document that sheds light onto an underrepresented facet of Soviet society--the average woman. (May)

    A Classic

    This book is a classic and a masterpiece. In respone to the review written by "Anonymous" in June 2004-- if you have no clue who I. Grekova is and have no appreciation for and undertstanding of masterpieces but rather compare works of literature to works by writers such as Danielle Steele where characters are black and white and everything is neatly solved in the end, then you should do intelligent readers a favor, and not post on matters you have no clue about it.

    Good but not Great....

    The characters emotions were very strong and real but the plot lacked a good finale. It's a good read if you want to pass the time but nothing really jumped out at me to say it was an excellent book. It needed something more to the plot. And it was a bit on the depressing side. Most of the characters ended up ugly and alone in the end. So it was kind of sad in that sense.
