Children's Literature
This pictorial guide is one of those appealing titles that you wish each child could own, or at least read. The author's passion for boats, ships, galleons, clippers, junks, battleships, ocean liners—anything with "speed, strength, and seaworthiness"—powers the books throughout its 64 pages. Excellent illustrations illuminate the contrast between ancient craft and those elegant clipper ships of the 1800s. Cutaway drawings reveal the interiors of Chinese bamboo junks of the 1400s as well as the insides of Columbus' Santa Maria and modern ships of war. From galleons to battleships, from pirate ships to those carrying out scientific research, this book conveys the spirit of those who sail, survey, steam ahead or migrate bravely to new worlds. Readers finish each brief section eager for more, wishing the book were at least twice its size. And that's not a bad message for teachers and librarians to convey to publishers. Kids are often eager for more in-depth information than their books provide. 2000, Kingfisher, $16.95. Ages 8 up. Reviewer: Joan Carris
School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-This colorful title presents a brief introduction to the history and use of various vessels. The final chapter discusses myths, mysteries, and shipwrecks including the tale of the Flying Dutchman, the Bermuda Triangle, and the 17th-century Swedish warship Vasa, discovered in 1956. The text consists of two paragraphs per subtopic with detailed captions accompanying the artwork. One large full-color painting, drawing, or photograph fills most of each two-page spread with smaller illustrations attractively arranged in the remaining space. There are a number of finely detailed, carefully labeled cutaway drawings. An inviting volume.-Eldon Younce, Harper Elementary School, KS Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
