Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Leslie Rounds
One of the "True Tales of Survival" series, this book tells the story of the five days Debbie Kiley spent at sea after the sailboat she was on sank during a hurricane in 1982. Debbie was an experienced sailor who signed on in Bar Harbor, Maine, to help crew the Trashman, a fifty-eight-foot yacht, to Florida. Although Debbie felt that there were problems with some of the other four members of the crew, ultimately it seemed to be more of a combination of bad weather and bad luck that sank the boat. The life raft was swept away, so the six survivors took shelter on a Zodiac raft that lacked any food, water, or other survival supplies. One of the six died of injuries and two others were killed by sharks after throwing themselves in the sea on the third day. Eventually, Debbie and the other remaining survivor, Brad, were rescued by the crew of a ship on the fifth day. Debbie felt that the key to their survival was that, more than the others, they stayed focused on what needed to be done and did not give up hope. The text, three or four paragraphs per double page spread, is accompanied by generic photographs of sharks, waves at sea, ships, etc. The book includes a table of contents, an index, a short list of other recommended titles, a link to Internet resources through the publisher, and a glossary. Although not an essential purchase for most libraries, the topic may attract reluctant readers who will enjoy an exciting survival tale. Reviewer: Leslie Rounds
