Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
Shirley Chisholm grew up in an era when men controlled all levels of American government, and racial segregation was still the norm in the United States. She was determined to make a difference for African-American women, ran for office, and was elected to the U. S. House of Representatives in 1968. She became the first African American woman to be elected to Congress. A "Contents" page details the scope of the materials. The respective eight chapters cover her legacy in detail, while sidebars emphasize historical events. A "Timeline" chronicles the dates of events. Sections entitled "Source Notes", "Further Information", and a "Bibliography" provide excellent references for further research. The "Index" gives easy navigation through the text. Black and white and color photographs show the era during her leadership. This book is part of the "Leading Women Series" which explores the lives of women leaders of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. The other women include Benazir Bhutto, Eva Peron, Hillary Clinton, Golda Meir, and Wilma Mankiller. This series celebrates the impact that women in leadership roles have made across cultures. Although Shirley Chisholm is an individual biography, the information contributes to the overall concept of women in leadersip positions and how they made an indelible mark on history.
