Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Marco, the shark, is great at gymnastics. His coach is excited about the upcoming sea meet, but on Tuesday Marco misses practice. He is in bed with a terrible toothache. When his family members are unsuccessful in pulling it, his mom calls the dentist on her cell phone. Dr. Gums is a big, scary shark. Marco hides under a chair in the waiting room. Dr. Gums finds him, places him in the dentist chair, and pulls the offending tooth. Marco feels much better, goes to gymnastics practice, and wins first place in the meet. The various fish exhibit human characteristics and expressions in the colorful illustrations. Fans of Sponge Bob Square Pants cartoons will find the undersea setting familiar. Facts about sharks are given on the first page, including the fact that a shark can go through 50,000 teeth in a lifetime. Intended as a beginning read alone book, suggestions for parents and caregivers are included. "Stone Arch Readers" series, Level 3. Reviewer: Phyllis Kennemer, Ph.D.

Meet the Author

Cari Meister has written more than a hundred books for children, including the "Tiny" series (Penguin) and the "Meet the Monsters" series (Stone Arch Books). She has received many awards for her books. Most recently, "Airplane Adventure" (Stone Arch Books), was named to "Parents" magazine Best Books for 2010. Cari has been fascinated by the night sky ever since she can remember. Her love of space and stars led her to Space Camp when she was growing up. Today, Cari lives in the mountains of Colorado, with her husband, four boys, two horses and one dog.

Steve Harpster has loved to draw funny cartoons, mean monsters, and goofy gadgets since he was able to pick up a pencil. In first grade, he avoided writing assignments by working on the pictures for stories instead. Steve was able to land a job drawing funny pictures for books, and that's really what he's best at. Steve lives in Columbus, Ohio, with his wonderful wife, Karen, and their sheepdog, Doodle.
