I always thought of the Japanese in California as coming here before World War Two and being taken away from farms and put into the relocation centers. Shizuka tells a whole new story about how the Japanse came as early as the 1860s and how they farmed and worked as carpenters and engineers. The story is about one family from the late 19th century until now. They worked their crops and had an active social and economic life. I'd never read or heard anything about their early years in America before. Maybe because it is in the form of a novel, it seems like they were not much different than their white and Mexican neighbors. They were fun and funny, serious and very devoted to one another and to the land. I want there to be a sequel!
