    Mixed Messages

This book has lovely illustrations and catchy text, but it has a very odd combination of very possitive and very negative messages. The cast is an obviously diverse group of adorable little girls who utterly devistate a shoe store, leaving the salesman litterally prostrate at the end. They end up buying nothing from the poor man, instead choosing to revamp their own shoes with home made crafts. On one hand, they are very much fending for themselves, working to make their way in the world (or at least make their own shoes), but on the other hand they are ruthlessly taking advantage of and abusing a poor hapless salesman giving him absolutely nothing to show for it. Nor is it pointed out that this is a bad thing. Sure kids, go right ahead and trash a store, it's to be expected!

So, if you want you daughter to grow up to be a diva with a shoe fixation, by all means, get her this book. At least her friends will be multi-racial.

It's fun. It rhymes (good for early readers - helps them remember words if they can't quite read some). And, while they do devastate the shoe store....it's fiction. And, since children (at least mine) know that they are not going to a shoe store alone - I think it's ok.
