Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Paula Rohrlick
Rusty loves basketball, and he is eager to play with his pals in the summer league, but he finds himself reluctantly serving as a referee instead. A few months back, Rusty had passed out on the court before learning that he has diabetes. Now he is used to being diabetic, and even though he cannot quite face giving himself insulin shots, he feels as if he is managing the disease just fine. The real problem is that his mother has forbidden him to play basketball again because she worries he might overdo it and have another bad insulin reaction. Then a young man named Alec Daws starts to take an interest in the boys' game, and he begins to coach them. Rusty steels himself and asks the doctor to teach him how to give himself injections, in order to get back to the sport he loves, and Alec starts to coach him, too. Alec has a disability of his own—he's missing two fingers from an accident—and he helps Rusty's parents understand how important it is for Rusty to be part of the team again. Can Rusty get back to being the basketball player he once was? As with all the Matt Christopher titles, lots of suspenseful sports action enlivens the story, and Rusty's struggle to not be treated as an invalid and to take responsibility for caring for his health is believable and sympathetic. Although this reissued entry in "The New Matt Christopher Sports Library" has an original 1963 publication date, the story feels up-to-date and the handsome hardcover format, with its new colorful cover and large print, will appeal to a new generation of young sports fans.
