Shoot-Out

Overview

What happens when a star player ends up on the worst team? He either learns to lose or he stops playing the game he loves. These are the choices facing Jake, who has gone from champion to last place, testing his sportsmanship every time his soccer team gets waxed. Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jody Little
Twelve-year old Jake Stuart is the star midfielder on his new soccer team. The trouble is, his team is not winning despite his efforts and those of his best buddy and goal keeper, Quinn. Stuart sees potential in his teammates though, especially in Kevin, a teammate who recently lost his mother. Stuart's coach encourages him to push Kevin on the soccer field and not go easy on him. Stuart tries his best, sending Kevin picture-perfect passes during practice and games. Unfortunately, Kevin does not respond and Stuart becomes more discouraged about his team. It is only when Stuart begins to make an attempt to get to know Kevin off the field that both his friendship with Kevin and his team starts to improve. Soccer fans will enjoy the play by play action that author Lupica writes with sureness and ease. The final shoot-out scene has all the tension of a real game and will leave readers cheering at the outcome. Reviewer: Jody Little
