Publishers Weekly

Bruhns (Killer Temptation) makes a successful move from category romance with this fast-paced thriller. Beautiful, capable ER nurse Lorraine "Rainie" Martin never fully recovered from the death of her parents in a carjacking. At a speed-dating event, Rainie falls hard for a dark and dangerous stranger who whisks her away. Expecting a night of passion, Rainie instead learns that Kick Jackson is dodging his employers at the CIA and detoxing from Oxycontin. When the government catches up to them and forces Rainie to join Kick in fighting terrorists in Egypt, she must battle her fear of travel and help Kick overcome addiction. Readers focused on the lovers' powerful chemistry will happily gloss over the hilariously implausible action scenes. A subplot involving Rainie's friend Gina and a sexy CIA operative is left hanging, presumably for a sequel. (Aug.)

Meet the Author

Nina Bruhns credits her gypsy great-grandfather for her great love of adventure. She has lived and traveled all over the world, including a six-year stint in Sweden. She has two graduate degrees in archaeology (with a specialty in Egyptology), and like her idol Indiana Jones, has been on scientific expeditions from California to Spain to Egypt and the Sudan.

All this has been great fodder for her books. Currently an author for Berkley, Silhouette Nocturne and Silhouette Romantic Suspense, Nina’s many adventures give her stories a colorful dimension and allow her to create vivid settings and characters that are out of the ordinary. She has earned two RITA nominations, and has won numerous other awards for her published books, including the prestigious National Readers Choice Award, three Daphne du Maurier Awards of Excellence for Overall Best Romantic Suspense of the year, five Dorothy Parker Awards, several RT BookClub Reviewers Awards, as well as having her books named Best Series Book of the Year by more than one online review site.

A native of Canada, Nina grew up in California and currently resides in beautiful Charleston, South Carolina, with her husband and three children.

    Shoot To Thrill-What a blast!

I picked this book up at the store the other day. Once I started reading it, I didn't put it down!lol. I loved Kick and Rainie. The action was non-stop, and the sub-plot of Gina and Gregg, really got me hooked..lol. Great Read! Can't wait for Marc's book and Gina and Gregg's!!! Ms. Bruhns is going to be added to my list of "auto-buy" authors, you know, the ones that you automatically buy as soon as their next book comes out...lol. I won't even have to read the synopisis, oh- Nina Bruhns? Yep, buy it...needless to say, I have added another author to my favorites...lol.

This is my first read from author Nina Bruhns and I really loved it! Sexy and edge-of-your-seat thrilling, the story sucked me in and never let go. I ordered the next books in the series right after I finished this one and can't wait for my book store to get them in. A must read for romantic suspense fans!

    super romantic suspense thriller

    Shoot to Thrill
    Nina Bruhns
    Berkley, Aug 2009, $7.99
    ISBN 9780425229057

Although time has passed, Bellevue Hospital emergency room nurse Lorraine "Rainie" Martin still grieves the tragic loss of her parents murdered during a carjacking. Their sudden deaths haunt everything she does and she knows it, but cannot do much about it as she has not moved on beyond the grief.

Thanks to her BFF Gina Cappozi, Rainie attends a speed-dating gala with the belief she will meet no one. Thus she is unprepared when Kyle "Kick" Jackson using the name Dr. Nathan Daneby of Doctors for Peace and recent National Geographic fame also goes to elude his former CIA Zero Unit suits. Strangers in the night, she expects an incredible evening as he escorts her from the event. Instead she learns he is running from the CIA whom he works for as a field operative and is also detoxing from Oxycontin. However his peers catch up to the pair and they are sent as a team to fight terrorists in Egypt. Rainie must wear her rubber underwear to overcome her fear of travel ever since her parents died and help Kick kick his addiction to Oxycontin.

This over the top of the Pyramids and the Empire State Building, romantic suspense thriller is fast-paced and a lot of fun so the audience will ignore their plausibility meter. Fans will get a Kick out of the hero and the waves of shock that would overwhelm the average person, but an inner city ER nurse sees worse daily. SHOOT TO THRILL is an entertaining blast.
