Publishers Weekly

Halle’s surprisingly deep second Artists romantic thriller (after Sins and Needles) lures the reader in with love and suspense before exploring ethical quandaries. Ellie Watt reluctantly leaves California with her ex, Javier Bernal, a powerful Mexican drug lord. Javier has threatened to kill the man she loves, Camden McQueen, if she doesn’t agree to go with him. Camden, a tattoo artist who’s on the run for a crime he didn’t commit, is determined to find Ellie, and he pursues her across the border. While Camden and Ellie try to find and follow their own moral compasses amid the violence and vengeance of Veracruz, they must fight for their very lives and the possibility of a future together. Ellie is a con artist and former girlfriend of a drug kingpin, but Halle turns her into an admirable protagonist who desperately tries to avoid sinking to Javier’s level. Camden is an equally complex character who easily transcends his backstory. Readers will eagerly look forward to the third book in this trilogy, which was originally self-published. (Nov.)

This is not your hearts and flowers with hot sex kind of romance

This is not your hearts and flowers with hot sex kind of romance novel. Oh there is hot sex, but not like you expected. No, The Artists Trilogy novels are dark and messed up romance stories and they are completely enthralling. It had been a while since I read Sins & Needles and I had somehow forgotten just how good Karina Halle is.

Shooting Scars picks up right where Sins & Needles left off with Ellie leaving with Javier in order to protect Camden and his family. Stuck with the man she once loved but now hates, Ellie is left to wonder what sort of plans he has in store for her. Is he going to kill her? And why has he come for her now after six years? Meanwhile, Camden wants to get his ex-wife and son settled and safe before he sets out after Ellie. But a betrayal has his life taking another unexpected turn. He finds himself a partner and together they start the hunt for Ellie sooner that he expected.

Back in the home they once shared together for a year, Javier tells Ellie what he wants from her. But I never felt like he was being 100% honest with her, even right up until the very end of the book. The last thing that she wants to do is help Javier, after all she hates the man. Doesn't she? Remember what they say about their being a fine line between love and hate? Yeah, well we definitely get a look at that in this book. And Javier is a damn expert at manipulating Ellie's past feelings to get what he wants from her. Since she feels likes she has no other choice, Ellie agrees to go along with Javier's plan. Ellie ends up doing something that I want to hate her for, but I can't. Honestly, I really felt like it was inevitable and I was waiting for it to happen. I don't like it, but I get it.

As Javier's plan gets put into motion, it seems more and more like an impossible task for Ellie. Will Camden and his new friend ever catch up to Ellie and Javier? And if they do, will it be too late to save her?

Ellie, Camden and Javier are all such complex characters with their own sets of demons. Each of them walks the line between right and wrong and often times the line is blurred, even for the reader. Camden has to do things to find Ellie that are morally wrong, but I find myself not giving a damn. And Javier. Sigh. He is a jerk and I do hate him, but I love how the author wrote him. Karina Halle's story telling is completely captivating and she had me deeply involved from the first page till the very end. There is never a dull moment and you will feel every emotion while reading Shooting Scars. And yes, there are twists and a cliffhanger at the end which sets us up for an exciting finale.

Wow, what a ride! Shooting Scars picks up right where Sins & Needles left off. Ellie surrenders to Javier because she believes it will save her true love, Camden.

Javier is a sick, ruthless murderer. I honestly can’t understand how some people can be Team Javier! I’ll admit, I was swayed a little bit and fell for his charm during On Every Street, but now that we see his true colors, I do NOT like him at all! He manipulates Ellie into going along with his plans for vengeance against Travis.

When Camden’s world falls apart yet again (thanks to his ex-wife and her family), he teams up with Gus to search for Ellie. He’s a little rougher and more badass in this book and I loved it! I’m definitely Team Camden!!

This was a very action-packed, suspenseful read. It’s told in alternating POVs from Ellie and Camden. I could not put it down and can’t wait to get my hands on book #3!!

    4.5 out of 5

In the interest of full disclosure, I have become friends with the author. HOWEVER - any previous review of her books that I have done has all been prior to that friendship, and I have fangirled over all the other books as well. The opinions expressed below were not affected in any way by my friendship with the author. Other than the fact that it allowed me to read it before release. :-)

Also, this review will contain spoilers for Sins & Needles, because that is unavoidable. However I will not spoil Shooting Scars for you.

Shooting Scars is an amazing follow up to Sins & Needles (TAT#1) and On Every Street (TAT#0.5). Because of what happened at the end of S&N, it is told in a dual POV, so you don't miss a second of the story. Ellie's story starts off a little slow for me, but that is made up by the fact that Camden's story blows up pretty fast. And then when his finally hits a lull, Ellie's gets out of control! My hear was racing and with Halle's tendency to put her characters through the ringer, I had no idea what was going to happen.

I have to stop here, and take a minute to say - I am a sick, sick person. I am Team Javier, and this story did nothing to diminish that love. Halle herself shakes her head in disappointment at me, after-all, this is Camden and Ellie's story, right? RIGHT?!

So, having clarified that for you, I LOVED THIS BOOK. There was a lot of Javier time, which was sorely missing in S&N. He has changed quite a bit in the 6 years since he and Ellie/Eden broke up, and I think that break-up messed with his head more than anything else. He really loved her. And in his mind he didn't do anything wrong. You can agree or not, but in my opinion, it is the thought that counts with him. He just doesn't have them emotional experience to deal with things like a normal healthy adult, and in that case, neither does Ellie.

There are plenty of twists and turns, along with some shocking revelations. The only reason this doesn't get the full 5 stars from me, is I felt like more should have happened. I am not sure what, but it just felt like something was missing. But, being a trilogy, many second books do the same. The writing, as always is excellent and clean. The story is gripping and hard to put down. With the way things ended I am most certainly looking forward to Bold Tricks, TAT#3, and at the same time am TERRIFIED what Halle will put her characters through in that last installment.

Just when you think it can't get any better than Sins and Needle

Just when you think it can't get any better than Sins and Needles, Karina Halle will rock your world once again in Shooting Scars.  Shooting Scars picks up right after Sins and Needles leaves off, taking you on a whirlwind ride with Ellie, Camden, and Javier into a world filled with danger, excitement, and nail-biting suspense.

Ellie is one badass chick.  I love her, even if some of her choices made me mad at her a few times.  She is one of those heroines that you won't forget.  Camden McQueen stole my heart in Sins and Needles, and in Shooting Scars he owns the lock and key.  I am team Camden all the way.  We also get to see a darker side of Camden in this novel, but that darker side is motivated by love, making him that much hotter.  Then there is Javier.  Javier is bad, and not the good kind of bad either.  He is also sexy and charming, and no matter how much I wanted to dislike him, I found myself smiling and fanning my face a few times during some scenes in this book.

Shooting Scars takes you deeper into the dangerous world of the drug cartel and is filled with intense passion, danger, drama, heartache, romance, heart-pounding action and suspense that will keep you on the edge of your seat while turning the pages to see what happens next.  The novel grips you and sucks you in from beginning to end and I absolutely loved it.  If there is one series I would recommend checking out, then the Artists Trilogy would be it.

4.5 heart-pumping, page-turning, intense, raw, emotionally charged stars!

    Holy Crapola!!!

After reading the first installment of The Artist Trilogy, Sins & Needles, my emotions were all over the place! I was actually scared to start reading Shooting Scars. I knew that this would be the book where I would pick a side. Which side do you ask? This was the time to decide if I was going to cheer for TeamCamden or TeamJavier. And, oh sweet mother of God was this a tough decision to make!

Shooting Scars picks up exactly where Sins & Needles ended. Ellie has made a decision that brought her back where she least wanted to be. Her past. Back in the arms of a man who lied to her and who has danger written all over him. But, as the days go by, the attraction that she once felt for Javier and that is still pretty much alive inside of her comes back to turn her world upside down. How far is Ellie willing to go to obtain what she has been looking for all along? Revenge is near, but at what cost?

Ok. Breathe in ... Breathe out ....

This was a non-stop roller coaster ride of emotions! From beginning to end, my heart was beating to every single chapter! The author did an amazing job at making me feel all kinds of emotions! One moment I was cheering for TeamCamden and the next I was shaking my maracas for TeamJavier! Holy Crap! It's tough being a reader sometimes!!! I am not a fan of love triangles, but this was nothing like I ever read before!

We really get to see what these three characters are made of in Shooting Scars. It took me a lot of time to connect with Ellie in Sins & Needles. She broke my heart with some decisions that she made. I knew that by reading Shooting Scars I was going to find the missing pieces that would make me connect to her character. I did connect with her more in this installment, but she still broke my heart in a few occasions. I wanted to scream at her and tell her to STOP!!! With everything that was happening in the story I had no clue how this was going to end! Holy Moly! What an ending!!! I did not see that twist coming at all ..... Eeeeeeep!!!! I can't wait to get my hands on Bold Tricks!!!! It's going to be EPIC!!!!

Camden McQueen stole my heart in this installment, but he was not the only one. Javier Bernal!!!!! Gahhhhhhhhhh!!!!! These two are definitely book boyfriend material!!!

I have to admit that I have On the Streets on my reading device. On the Streets takes place six years before Sins & Needles. This is a novella about Ellie's past with Javier. I think I decided not to read it because I wanted to start reading Shooting Scars with only what I had learned of Javier in Sins & Needles. I am so glad that I did! I will no doubt be reading On the Streets now. My decision is made, and I am cheering loud and clear that I want Ellie to end up with Camden, but I want Javier to find that special someone who will turn his world upside down. I have discovered a side of him that I never knew existed and this king needs to find his queen! I have no doubt in my mind that he loves Ellie, but she's not the angel he is looking for!

There are so many twist and turns in this story that I was dizzy!! Betrayals, lies, lust, vengeance, love, danger you can't go wrong with Shooting Scars! Karina Halle's writing style is captivating and it never let's you go! I read this book in one sitting and I could not put it down! If you want to read a series that will keep you at the edge of your seat, look no further. The Artist Trilogy is what you need! I highly recommend it and I can't wait to read the conclusion of this amazing trilogy!

I give, Shooting Scars, by Karina Halle 4.5 heart-pumping, page-turning, intense, raw, emotionally charged stars!

    Rating 4.5/5

Exhilarating. That's the only word that comes to mind to describe Shooting Scars. This time you'll either still like Ellie or (really) dislike her for her choices. I'm not gonna lie (I got why she did it) but I was crushed when she did that thing she did (him). Ellie was still the same woman with so many different layers and nuances which what made her such a compelling heroine. Although all the male characters argued the points of her being either good or bad, I really felt that she was a good person at her core, but driven to do things out of fear or because she'd been manipulated and allowed the past to cloud her judgment.

We got to see more of Camden's underlying dark side. With a flashback or two to their past, we saw that he was capable of violence whenever he felt he needed to defend Ellie's honor. Once he committed to going after Ellie and teamed up with Gus, we saw what the nerdy tattoo artist was really capable of. In short, I think where Ellie is concerned, he's willing to do stupid things. But the soft side of him, when it does show, it makes you want to root for him even more.

I'm not sure how I felt about Javier as an (anti) hero. The veiled claims of loving her were too shrouded in his agenda, both past and present. He was a sexy devil in the intimate scenes with Ellie. But outside of that, it was difficult to gauge his sincerity. One minute he would show signs that he had a soul or a conscience, and the next minute he would turn on the impassiveness.

Looking at the bigger picture, I'm not as convinced anymore that what Travis did to her leg warrants the lengths she was going to and the sacrifices she was willing to make just to get revenge. I just felt her parents were more to blame more than anyone, and yet she still cared for them. After all the hurt and betrayal, she wanted to help her mother? Strangely, Javier and Camden had lost much more.

Loved the suspense in this one and the emotional tailspin all three of these characters went through. I have a theory about Gus, so I can't wait to find out if I'm right. Now that the three of them will have to work together towards a common goal, I wonder how they'll handle the love triangle situation. I'm deducting half a point on behalf of Camden because yeah, that scene broke my heart a little as well. At this point, I'm still Team Camden.

*Complimentary ARC of the paperback to be published Oct 2014 for the purpose of an honest review*

Shooting Scars is the second book in The Artists Trilogy by auth

Shooting Scars is the second book in The Artists Trilogy by author Karina Halle. The trilogy includes the following novels:
    #0.5 On Every Street
    #1 Sins & Needles
    #2 Shooting Scars
    #3 Bold Tricks

So much happened in this book! SO MUCH!!! It was a wild, wild ride. The action was through the roof and I kept re-reading these amazing scenes. By the way, did you know Coffee-mate is flamable???

At the end of Sins & Needles (book #1), Ellie makes a deal with Javier in an effort to ensure Camden and his family's safety. Shooting Scars is about Ellie's experiences with Javier while she is fullfilling her end of the bargain. The story is told in alternating points of view by both Ellie and Camden so we also watch Camden struggle with Ellie's choices. Gus is heavily involved in this book which I loved! As referenced in the book synopsis, Javier is evasive about what Ellie's part of the deal truly entails and she must always be in survival mode, never knowing what will happen next or the true motivation behind events. Javier has changed over the past six years and it is not pretty. On Camden's end, he "toes the line between love and retribution, he realizes that in order to get back the woman he loves, he may have to lose himself in the process. He might just turn into the very man he’s hunting." The characters in this story are forced to "evolve" along with their experiences and the layering is incredible. While one may not like these characters and their actions, the author succeeds in allowing the reader full understanding of why they are the way they are and what is prompting their change. We all had changed. The past was behind us. And I had no idea what our future was."

    My favorite quotes:
"'Tough neighborhood?' I asked. 'I saw a girl on a My Little Pony bike outside, she looked kind of nasty."

"Gus brought the duffel bag into the back seat and began sorting through the weapons...An assault rifle, a few handguns of various calibers, plus a sniper rifle. Then there were two knives, a small axe, a small plastic bottle, hornet spray, various gas lighters and a container of Coffee Mate...'Coffee Mate,' he said, face serious. 'You get a cloud of that in the air, there's nother more flammable. Not to mention how easy fireballs are to make.' 'Okaaay,' I said...I wasn't counting on doing anything that involved igniting a puff of non-dairy creamer. Also made me wonder if people knew what they were putting in thier coffee every morning."

"'Then why aren't you upset?' 'Not everyone shows it like you. Just because I'm not setting people's faces on fire, doesn't mean I'm not upset."

"There seemed to be a light at the end of this tunnel when you were facing the other way."

I am now on the 3rd book or if u want to call it the 2nd book, although there was a novella, which was labeled .5, so maybe this is book 2.5 of this series. Yet, I am still unable to determine what all the hype about this series is. I still do not like Ellie. I think that she is way too silly and simple to be called a con artist. I am truly not sure how she survived this long as a con artist. The people she was conning must have been extremely dumb. I don't think she deserves a happy ending at all. I really don't think that she deserves to be with Camden and I am truly hoping that he wises up and moves on from her. She has done nothing but cause him pain and suffering. She does not know how to truly love. Hasn't Camden been through enough although? I really hope he finds a nice woman and gets custody of his son, Ben, because his ex-wife is a real witch too. The person that truly keeps this book or rather series interesting is Javier, and I am constantly waiting for when he makes his appearances, because otherwise the series is very slow going. It I s very disheartening to me that I want a drug Cartel Lord to have a happy ending and to get his revenge on Travis. I actually love Javier's character. Despite thinking that he did wrong Ellie when they were younger, she knew what and who she was getting involved with when she got involved with him, and I do believe he truly loved her, but his vengeance came first and once he explained it I understood why he did it. However, I believe she was a complete idiot for taking his car and money. It is her fault that everyone is in the predicament they are in.

I just don't have words. Ok, well maybe a few words. Holy moly. This second book in the trilogy (On Every Street being a novella) knocked me for a loop. Now let me say I'm still 1000% Team Camden. I get why he did what he did in this book. And I may have laughed a bit evilly when he used his tattoo gun...but he HAD to, right? I'm going with yes, doesn't mean his bad side didn't completely fly free though. He loves Ellie and she once again kicks him in the damn cajones.
Oh Ellie. I don't know if I want to hug her or choke her. She has to KNOW she can't trust Javier. She has to KNOW she can trust Camden. But poor, emotional choices abound and she gets too entangled with Javier. I may have screamed at my nook when said choices were being made...
And then their is Javier. Oh crazy, psycho, unstable and violent hot man. Leave them alone! But noooooooo-he wants Ellie, and he wants revenge. And we find nothing is too low for him to get what he wants.
    Gus-I hope he is ok.
The ending-how in the he!! will they get out of this? I can't wait to see what tricks Karina has up her sleeve

Shooting Scars is the 2nd book in The Artists Trilogy. This boo

Shooting Scars is the 2nd book in The Artists Trilogy. This book is not a standalone, it's part of a series (Trilogy actually) that should be read IN ORDER!
I am not going to go in to a summary of the story in this review (plenty of good ones already). I really don't even know exactly which genre to categorize this book (series). It's got it all! Romance, suspense, action, edgy, dark, thrilling, gore, sex, humor, twists & turns, betrayal, angst, drama, I could go on for hours. But most importantly what this story has is HEART, and lots of it! I'm not saying every character has a heart, but I dare anyone to tell me they do not feel emotionally connected to these three broken but beautifully written characters.
I loved everything about this story but what really grabs me is the author's amazing writing. For me, this book was in color. The perfectly detailed imagery brings the story to life as if you are watching the whole thing unfold on the big screen.
In my experience, where Karina Halle really shines is her characters. They are never perfect (who is?), often broken but oh so real (I am convinced Camden & Ellie are living among us along with Dex & Perry)!!!
The bottom line is Karina Halle NEVER disappoints!!!

I absolutely LOVE this series!!! This is book 2.5 in the Artist

    I absolutely LOVE this series!!!
This is book 2.5 in the Artist Trilogy and oh dose Karina Halle know how to keep me reading!!!
When I think of great book it's one that stays on my mind for a long while after finishing. "Sins And Needles" (book 1) and "On Every Street" (1.5) did that for me. I could not wait to read this next book and I have to say it was worth the wait!! This book had me on a roller coaster ! I could not put it down but at times HAD to put it down! You can't help but want to love Ellie so bad. There are parts of this series with all the people that make you feel for them on one page and then yell and scream at them the second you flip to the next! I love a book that keeps me on my toes keeps me in the dark feeling for the light! This book dose that to me all is not always good and all is not always bad! There are definitely not perfect people skipping through the fields of flowers saying the perfectly most romantic phrases in this book! It's raw and exciting and sexy!! Loved it and will absolutely be pacing waiting for the last book!!
