Children's Literature
The order of birds that Miller focuses on in this book is called Charadriiformes, which means "plover-like birds." Even though these birds do not look alike, their skeletons, the roofs of their mouth and their feathers reveal their relationship to a common ancestor. The book opens with facts and pictures of shorebirds and then puts them in their appropriate place in the animal kingdom. The charts and description present the order of living things in an understandable manner. Selected shorebirds from the Americas and other parts of the world are featured. The excellent pictures will let readers compare and contrast the species and marvel at these fascinating creatures--from the long-legged birds with a needlelike bill to the fat puffins that wobble about on reddish-orange, webbed feet. There is a guide to watching shorebirds, a "Words to Know" list, a page of resources that includes books, videos and web sites, and an index. Another good choice for report writers and curious young minds. 2000, Watts,
