Neely, North Carolina as narrated by the naive and knowing Louis Benfield.
"Anyone from anywhere should feel a fond familiarity with the citizens of Neely." (The New York Times Book Review)

One of the funniest books I've read in a long time. Books usually don't make me laugh out loud; this one did. I grew up in a small southern town so I could identify with the way the characters interacted and spoke. The characters were extremely quirky and eccentric but never annoyingly so. I also appreciated the author making the characters eccentric, not dumb southern hicks. You could tell the author loved the characters he had created. The book really is a series of vignettes. I usually like a book with a stronger, more cohesive plot but I forgave the book for not having this because I grew to love the characters. Every once in a while, the book would take a poignant turn amidst the zaniness. All in all, a very satisfying book that I would highly recommend. Especially if feeling depressed. If you don't laugh with the book, you will DEFINITELY have a big smile while reading it.

I'm from the South, so I'm well versed in the 'back story', or as my friend from Union Springs, Alabama, calls them, 'bunny trails'. But these trails get so far off the path it turns into a tangle. Humorous? Yes, in places. Preoccupied with death somewhat, but what good Southern isn't? Glad I got this one as a freebie (or .99). If you love long sentences relaying what someone told someone else's 2nd cousin once removed to the postman's wife's sister's friend's husband, then go for it! For me, I'm glad it's over. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

I loved the humor and the unassuming style of writing. If you like quirky characters and odd stories that could actually happen where you live, you will want to read this book. I am here b/c I am looking for another book by this author with the hope that he is consistently wonderful! Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. This is one of the most enjoyable books I have ever read. It is a very funny depiction of life in a small town where everybody knows everybody else's business and their life stories. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.
