Chesterton wrote about absolutely everything, his home country being only one of thousands of topics. And while this essay is entitled "A Short History of England", there's nothing truly historic about it. What makes it a good read is his enthusiasm on the topic, and his inner voice. I definitely recommend it, unless you truly are searching for a historical piece of literature, in which case this isn't for you.

This has to be one of the worst books I have ever tried to read. I stuggled up to 40 pages of it and I know absolutely nothing more about English history now than what I did beforehand. The writings seem more to be the author's personal opinions rambling on forever on subjets vaguely connected with the topic but shedding almost no information on the history. A good examle is the chapter entitled "THe Crusades" wherein there appears to be nothing at all on the history of the Crusades.
