This is not only a great baseball book, it's a great book. It gives an insight into baseball that I never imagined. It makes me want to watch baseball to find out if I can notice things going on that are like the situations in the book. The social interplay of the characters in the book is fascinating. They say: 'write what you know.' Zane grey at one time played professional baseball. He is also a great writer in general. His descriptions are very enjoyable. He creates visual images by describing them as they might be seen, as opposed to trying to impress us with flowery writing. When he describes something, you can see it happening.

The 'Shortstop' is the story of Chase Alloway who when his father dies leaves his mother and his crippled brother and goes out on his own to make his way as a ballplayer. The story of how he tries out in the minors,of his adventures on the road ,of his making it are moving and exciting. The story is in a way the story of the American dream realized,of making it through hard work and effort .It tells how Chase finally does make it , comes home, helps his mother and brother, brings with him the girl he has met who is going to be his wife. The book captures the spirit of turn- of - the century America, of the small- town baseball world. It is rich in its insights into the game of baseball and the dream of life. I read this book every night before going to bed for many many years. I think it should have a much higher place in the pantheon of American children's baseball books than it does.
