Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Audrey glibly narrates this story of her career as a short, underdeveloped, shoplifting movie fan extraordinaire. Every night after school, she sneaks off to her friend Mr. Eisenstein's revival house, where she immerses herself in golden oldies. Her mother Gertie disapproves, but Audrey is determined to get her film fix each day, and to avoid other problems--that she is not doing well at school, that she has no friends. She develops sticky fingers gradually--first taking other people's unwanted objects, and then moving into shoplifting runs at a local store. Audrey will remind readers of an M. E. Kerr heroine, with her offbeat, single-minded approach and her 100% unique characteristics. The film references don't necessarily have to be understood, since what comes through is Audrey's whole-hearted need to be part of the silver screen, even if it's only as a blissful spectator. Kirshenbaum's first book is a likable tangle of plot and personality; unlike the gangsters she imitates, Audrey is reformable. The quiet ending winds the plot up perfectly, or as Audrey says, ``Now that's a first-rate end to a movie.'' Ages 12-up. (Oct.)
School Library Journal
Gr 4-8-- Audrey has problems, not the least of which is her role as a protagonist for an adolescent novel. She loves movies from the `30s and `40s and quotes people such as Edward G. Robinson, The Thin Man, and Alan Ladd. In an age when teens think anything not in color and over the age of 21 is obsolete, 11-year-old Audrey is a far cry from your average girl. While the idea, no doubt, is to educate youngsters about movie history, it falls short of giving readers a character who is either likable or identifiable. Audrey is a lonely girl who masks this fact by living in her (black-and-white) movie fantasies. Outwardly she lies to teachers and parents, steals a multitude of items, never speaks to others her age, and wants to grow up to be a gangster. These serious problems are treated frivolously throughout the book, with hints toward loose solutions in the final didactic chapter. The book is well written and contains some unique qualities; however, in the final analysis, poor Audrey suffers too much from being the victim of a movie buff's nostalgia trip. --Judie Porter, Media Services Center, Portsmouth School Department, RI
