Overview

Building on the precepts of the Imago Relationship Therapy Model, as introduced in Dr. Harville Hendrix's best-selling Getting the Love you Want, Short Term Couples Therapy makes available to the professional therapist the technique and rationale of this evolutionary approach to working with couples in a brief therapy context.

The six-session format is laid out clearly and cogently so that its potential for application is immediately apparent, especially given the parameters of employee assistance programs and managed care. A gifted communicator, the author distills the essence of the Imago Model into a pracical, workable methodology that will have meaning in the life of the couple long after the sessions are over.

What this book offers is a unique reality-based approach to facilitating effective couple interaction, so that the Couples Dialogue is internalized and enduring. The couple then moves on with a more flexible and authentic relationship in place. And the therapist can feel good about letting them go.\

Discusses a 6-session format, incl. development, childhood wounds & mate selection/restructuring frustrations/etc.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
A six-session format for repairing a marriage, especially convenient for fitting into the temporal parameters of managed care. The copyrighted method encourages increased couples interaction but smacks slightly of new-age self-absorption. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com)

    There's MUCH more to it

Imago is about so much more than repeating back what you heard... it's about creating a safe space for the couple, allowing each member of the couple to understand the other's pespective, exploring the symbolism of the frustrating behaviors, providing structure for effective change and reintroducing nurturing behaviors. It is, of course, important to find a coach with whom you work well for any therapy to be effective. I have personally seen many cases of couples helped in very deep and meaningful ways through this method.

    Don't do it!

If you're a couple in need of help, avoid a therapist who uses this model!! It is extremely frustrating and uneffective to couples who are seeking to begin resolving their issues. You'll spend a number of sessions (and money!) just repeating what your partner is saying back to him or her. Great if you're at the end of therapy, but potentially devastating to a relationship in need of a more active approach in order to save it!!
