While there are no complete recordings of each of Shostakovich's scores for the three Maxim films, there is this recording of nine cues from all three movies. Unfortunately, the notes don't indicate which cue is from which movie, so it is impossible to make a critical judgment of the quality of the scores for the separate movies. But it is possible to make a critical judgment of the quality of the nine cues and, while no comparison is possible because no other recordings of the Maxim music exists, it is also possible to make a critical judgment on the quality of the performance. But it is possible to make a critical judgment of the quality of the nine cues and, while no comparison is possible because no other recordings of the Maxim music exists, it is also possible to make a critical judgment on the quality of the performance. This is terrific movie music. Although the Prologue is a weird march-waltz with a soprano solo !, the Prelude is an impressive choral march. The "Attack Scene" is brutally effective, the "Death of the Old Worker" is a massive funeral march cum expressive cello solo, the Waltz is light and infectious, the "Demonstration" is a quick march, the "Fight on the Barricades" is a violent fugato, the "Funeral March and Finale" is brooding and baleful, and the concluding "Overture to the Vyborg District" -- the final Maxim film -- is yet another march, this time fast and ferocious. Michail Jurowski has made some good and some not-so-good recordings of Shostakovich's film scores, but this 1995 recording of the Maxim music is one of the very best. Without inflating what is clearly movie music to the status of symphonic music, Jurowski makes the Maxim music sound like great movie music. He obtains wonderful playing from the Berliner Rundfunk-Sinfonie-Orchester and Capriccio gives the Sinfonieorchester magnificent sound. A superb recording of great movie music.
