Overview

Like most girls, Jessie Johnson will never forget the first time she met her mother-in-law. After all who can forget a shotgun pointed at them? Bartered for a dead horse at gun point, she either agrees to marry one of the Quinter boys or her brother will hang for horse theft. Jessie knows nothing about being a wife- other than the wedding will likely put her new husband in grave danger. After being knocked unconscious by his brothers, Kid Quinter finds himself surrounded by his uncouth family, the sheriff, a preacher, and an adorable young woman. Tied to a chair, he's given no choice but to marry Jessie Johnson. And that’s just the beginning of his troubles- it appears his pretty little wife has quite a past, including a notorious gunslinger looking for retribution.

Get some pride girl! Jessie is weak and pathetic, begging and crying all the time. Kid is a total jerk to her and she just keeps begging him to let her stay with him. Grow up and get some self respect!

The story was well written, reasonably plausible, and did a good job of hitting emotional highlights.

I mean really, who can resist this part of the blurb "[b]artered for a dead horse at gun point, she either agrees to marry one of the Quinter boys or her brother will hang for horse theft"? I love strange twists to stories, and since horse thievery was a big crime (although in the story it plays out a little differently than one would ever expect), I had to read this one! I really enjoyed the crazy antics of the rough-and-tumble brothers and the down-and-dirty mother-in-law. By the end of the book, nearly everyone had some redeeming feature, even the heroine's conniving brother who initially tried to trade her for said horse, and the couple had reached their HEA. This is the first in a quintet of books (most of which feature Ma and her shotgun-weddings). ***I received my copy when it was a free book.***
