Shotgun Sorceress (Spellbent Series #2) [NOOK Book]

Darker than expected

This sequel to Spellbent was a lot darker and twisted than I came to expect. Too much gratuitous sex, Chester-Molester Adults, kiddie porn kids, attempted incest... I didn't like it much.

The denoument sucked. All this buildup about a seemingly invincible opponent led up to nothing. Even Pal was lacking in action. I'm glad I picked this up at a library and didn't bother buying it. I would have been PO'd.

Someone cut the book in half

Got to page 149 and there was no more book! Either the author or the publisher or B&N cut the book in half in order to make more off the series.

I like Jessie

I bought this book.

Jessie Shimmer is a love her or hate her addition to the urban fantasy world, between her crudeness and the dark, dark nature of her stories you'll find very few readers taking a middle road. Shotgun Sorceress is the follow up to Lucy A. Snyder's Spellbent and the first thing you should know is that Lucy's a tried and true horror writer. It's evident from her treatment of magic (which really is more like the dark and twisted, old school occult novels than the twee magical worlds you can find today) and the focus on extra dimensional devils and demons (and even the supposed worldly peace keepers who themselves are not good beings) that magic is not something to be trifled with. Just being a Talent in Snyder's world makes you tougher and more raw than mundanes.

In the first book Jessie Shimmer had to rescue her boyfriend from an hell dimension personally cooked up for him and his family by one of their own. She took on angels, the ruling council of local magic-wielders and gave up a lot of herself (namely her eye and her arm) to get Cooper back. This book allows Jessie no rest as the ruler magic users are still after her for her actions, as are the crystaline-angel-not-really-good-guys who enforce all the magical rules. In fact the latter appear to set Jessie and her family up, sending them into a sealed pocket which imprisons a demon that has taken over a small Texas town and turned it into a post apocalyptic dystopia.

Shotgun Sorceress has a zombie-apocalypse feel, without ever hitting on the tropes of that subgenre. Instead it stands out as something entirely its own, neither its creatures or magic system mimic other books. It's a bold, energetic, vivid and, yes, horrific, addition to the paranormal craze. Wild writing will keep readers guessing. The unique world and characters make Shotgun Sorceress a stand out wickedly enjoyable fantasy story.

Shotgun Sorceress

I strongly suggest you read the previous book in this series (Spellbent) prior to reading this book.

I've been anxiously awaiting this sequel ever since the last installment ended.
Shotgun Sorceress takes-off right where Spellbent left-off and never slowed down! Lucy Snyder's imagination is incredible. This book was exciting, creative and magically action-packed. I was on the edge of my seat through the most of the book and I completely devoured this story.

I highly recommend this book to fellow dark urban fantasy readers. I look forward to the next book Switchblade Goddess due out 2011.

A Shotgun Blast of Awesome

Lucy A. Snyder's sequel to her debut novel "Spellbent" picks up just after the end of the first novel. Jessie Shimmer has successfully rescued her lover Cooper from Hell after the worst week of her life, and come out of the experience with a magic eye, a hellfire arm, and a formerly cute ferret familiar that's now a giant spider monster. All she wants to do is curl up and recuperate from her efforts, but first she has to make nice with the local wizard's council in a nasty corner of the faerie realm, and after that, the vengeful alien gods of magic send her to Texas -- specifically, a corner of the Lone Star State bled dry of magic and ruled by a monstrous but impossibly sexy soul harvester named Miko. Can Jessie beat the odds a second time and save her friends and an entire town from horrific evil? Or are her magically debased emotions going to see her spending eternity as Miko's girltoy?

Snyder's story here is a great deal darker than her previous one. Already stressed out after the first novel's adventures, Jessie's emotions are on a hair-trigger now, even considering Miko's power to artificially exaggerate the emotions of humans. In fact, all our lead characters are on edge and snappish for most of the novel, with only Pal, Jessie's familiar, on a fairly even keel. Snyder's character work here really knocks things home, with even minor characters given full and fascinating personalities. The mood and settings are great, too -- from the beautiful but dangerous Faery to a cramped, besieged, and paranoid college campus to a makeshift pup tent in the backyard, all the settings make you feel like you're right there watching the action. And there's a ton of action, too -- Jessie may be a spellcaster, but she spends a lot of her time beating people up, shooting zombies, and running to catch up with the bad guys.

If you loved "Spellbent" -- and you better have, or else -- you're going to love "Shotgun Sorceress," too. Go pick it up.

The second dark Shimmer suburb fantasy is a fabulous entry

Mage Jessie Shimmer went to hell and back, but succeeded on her quest to return with boyfriend Cooper Marron and his younger brothers (see Spellbent). However, the cost was exorbitant with the visible being the loss of an eye and a hand. However the invisible price is stratospherically higher for the sorceress who killed a Virtus untouchable spirit lord while in Hades; as even making love turns her abode into an inferno, almost like a barbeque pit, as she has come back possessing fire magic.

Jessie expects the Virtus Regnum to assault her as this beast cannot ignore whet she did. However, Miko the mighty has come to Texas to deal with Jessie. Almost upon arrival, Miko creates a giant bubble that engulfs the town and traps Jessie, Cooper, his brother and her spider familiar inside along with the innocent residents of Cuchillo. Step two in Miko's scheme is changing the natives into zombies. Hell, she needs to challenge Miko if she and the others are to survive.

The second dark Shimmer suburb fantasy is a fabulous entry as everyone will believe in Snyder's Spellbent due to the cast. Opportunity costs are incredibly laid out as choosing one has second and third order effects on not just the decision-maker. With a strong mentally disturbed cast that runs the gamut of the otherworldly pantheon, sub-genre fans will want to read the gory Shotgun Sorceress.
