School Library Journal - School Library Journal
Gr 7 Up-- In this well-researched, well-written volume, Terkel gives an overview of drug use and regulation in the U. S. from the mid-19th century to the present. But more importantly, she presents an excellent compilation of pro and con legalization arguments. There is a rather obvious anti-drug use bias in the presentation, but Terkel has managed very ably to separate the desirability of legalization from the desirability of use. This is a comprehensive, thoughtful, and thought-provoking treatment of a somewhat complex and emotional issue. It should prove an invaluable resource for research projects, particularly given its extensive bibliography, but beyond that, the subject matter and its excellent presentation should make it popular with general readers as well. --Trish Ebbatson, Delaware County District Library, OH
