Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This concise book walks the reader through the concepts and procedures of shoulder arthroscopy based on the experience, innovation, and fundamental knowledge of one of the world's leaders in the technique. The second edition follows Dr. Snyder's shoulder arthroscopy primer released some 10 years ago and updates the reader on advances and current techniques.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a primary reference for surgeons who perform shoulder arthroscopy and update them regarding the current techniques. Only a few well-respected leaders in the field could successfully take on this challenge; Dr. Snyder is one of those select teachers. The book does a remarkable job of addressing a variety of topics and is easy to use.
Audience: The target audience is obviously the practicing orthopedic surgeon who has an interest in or practices shoulder arthroscopy. The book is written to a level that the most advanced surgeons will benefit from the nuances Dr. Snyder provides, but the audience that will benefit most, and for which it will be a primary reference, includes residents, fellows, and general orthopedists who seek the guidance of a master arthroscopist.
Features: The book walks the reader through fundamental aspects of shoulder arthroscopy, from overcoming the learning curve and operating room set-up to advanced techniques of surgical stabilization, knot tying, and rotator cuff repair. Each chapter is concise and targeted. The images are sharp, clear and educational. The special bonus of this second edition is a DVD that includes video presentations of the techniques Dr. Snyder presents.
Assessment: The first edition of this book quickly became the "go-to" book for shoulder arthroscopists. I know of no master instructor who does not have this book in his personal library. The second edition is a timely update; the advances over 10 years have been tremendous and in many ways led by Dr. Snyder. The second edition is a welcome update and will share a prime part of my library in an honored place next to the original. This book is a must for all orthopedic libraries and any surgeon who performs shoulder arthroscopy.
Mark R. Hutchinson
This monograph presents a review of shoulder arthroscopy and the current techniques practiced by Dr. Snyder, a leading shoulder arthroscopist. The purpose is to present the current arthroscopic techniques used by the author. In addition, the book is intended to serve to stimulate additional interest in shoulder arthroscopy and aid in better diagnosis and treatment of shoulder pathology. In general, the author succeeds in accomplishing these goals. The book is targeted at the novice shoulder arthroscopist, either resident or practitioner, learning new techniques. In addition, practicing arthroscopists and shoulder surgeons will benefit from Dr. Snyder's clinical pearls and techniques. The monograph is complemented by more than 400 figures. The color images are of particular high quality and greatly assist in identifying arthroscopic anatomy and pathology. Indeed, the color used in the book makes it most pleasurable and easy to read. Although the number of references is few, the references chosen are both current and highly pertinent. Although any monograph or book whose primary goal is to present one author's techniques is somewhat limited in its breadth and application, this book has many significant advantages. Dr. Synder is well respected in the field and an excellent arthroscopist, physician, and technician. More specifically, this book is an excellent, well-illustrated, easy-to-read presentation of the topic. This book would be a worthy addition to the library of any resident or physician planning to perform shoulder arthroscopy.
A monograph of current arthroscopic surgical techniques used by the shoulder team at the Southern California Orthopedic Institute in Van Nuys, California. Initial chapters review the most basic and important concepts of shoulder preparation and patient care. Subsequent chapters present a number of rigid step-by-step methods for entering the shoulder and discuss advanced topics in the treatment of arthritis, tendon problems, acro-mioclavicular joint disease rotator cuff problems, and calcific tendinitis.
