Doody's Review ServiceReviewer: Mark R Hutchinson, MD (University of Illinois at Chicago College of Medicine)
Description: This concise book walks the reader through the concepts and procedures of shoulder arthroscopy based on the experience, innovation, and fundamental knowledge of one of the world's leaders in the technique. The second edition follows Dr. Snyder's shoulder arthroscopy primer released some 10 years ago and updates the reader on advances and current techniques.
Purpose: The purpose is to serve as a primary reference for surgeons who perform shoulder arthroscopy and update them regarding the current techniques. Only a few well-respected leaders in the field could successfully take on this challenge; Dr. Snyder is one of those select teachers. The book does a remarkable job of addressing a variety of topics and is easy to use.
Audience: The target audience is obviously the practicing orthopedic surgeon who has an interest in or practices shoulder arthroscopy. The book is written to a level that the most advanced surgeons will benefit from the nuances Dr. Snyder provides, but the audience that will benefit most, and for which it will be a primary reference, includes residents, fellows, and general orthopedists who seek the guidance of a master arthroscopist.
Features: The book walks the reader through fundamental aspects of shoulder arthroscopy, from overcoming the learning curve and operating room set-up to advanced techniques of surgical stabilization, knot tying, and rotator cuff repair. Each chapter is concise and targeted. The images are sharp, clear and educational. The special bonus of this second edition is a DVD that includes video presentations of the techniques Dr. Snyder presents.
Assessment: The first edition of this book quickly became the "go-to" book for shoulder arthroscopists. I know of no master instructor who does not have this book in his personal library. The second edition is a timely update; the advances over 10 years have been tremendous and in many ways led by Dr. Snyder. The second edition is a welcome update and will share a prime part of my library in an honored place next to the original. This book is a must for all orthopedic libraries and any surgeon who performs shoulder arthroscopy.
