Overview

This is an interesting set that looks back toward the 1920s even though none of its participants were that old. Trumpeter Johnny Letman (who also has a few vocals), trombonist Fred Lonzo and Bill Greenow (on various reeds) have a fair number of solos with Letman faring best, but this date is really dominated by the vocals of Topsy Chapman and Thais Clark; only two of the 14 numbers are instrumentals. Both singers are spirited if not overly original and, even if none of the material is all that rare, these renditions are enjoyable. Lars Edegran, who switches between piano, banjo and guitar, organized this well-paced show. ~ Scott Yanow
