Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Patrice Russo Belotte
Adopting the "V" shape of flight formation is commonplace for most geese, but not Webster. He knows his alphabet from beginning to end, and he just does not like the letter "V." Determined to convince his flock that change is good, he asks the leader if they can fly in a different shape. Worried that it will cause too much confusion, Sir Graybill says it just cannot be done. Along with some encouragement and help from his friends, Webster surprises the flock with a varied formation that everyone can soar to—even Sir Graybill. Part of the "Writer's Toolbox" series, this storybook guides young writers through all of the steps necessary to write and illustrate a picture book. Each page of Webster's story includes hints and steps to help young writers develop characters, plot, conflict, and resolution in their own stories. A glossary at the back of book helps define important writing terminology. Careful planning is necessary in writing a picture book since the story is told through both words and pictures. The "Let's Review" section keeps all the steps in order so that readers can create their own checklists. Finally, "Writing Tips" help inspire creativity and keep young writers organized through the process. Reviewer: Patrice Russo Belotte
