Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Thinking that the Easter Bunny is a monster, Patrick frightens him away. When he tell SpongeBob Squarepants what he has done, SpongeBob decides to don a bunny costume and hide the eggs himself. Even with the eggs right under his nose, Patrick cannot find them so SpongeBob offers some of his. Patrick takes them all. He brings them back, however, when he discovers an enormous egg. Much to his surprise, when it cracks open, a monster fish comes out and begins to chase them. The end. This insipid little story is an affront to beginning readers. There are poor attempts at humor in both the text and illustrations. The sarcasm of Squidward may have appeal to pre-adolescents who watch the television show but it is inappropriate for primary grade children, and would be lost on older emergent readers. This little paperback comes complete with an advertisement for a SpongeBob Squarepants video game on the back inside cover, making us painfully aware of why this book was printed. "Ready-to-Read" series, level 2. 2004, Simon Spotlight/Nickelodeon/Simon & Schuster, Ages 5 to 7.

Children's Literature - Marilyn Courtot
SpongeBob is all excited and seeks out his friend Patrick to tell him that the Easter Bunny is coming tomorrow. Patrick seems to be a bit confused, since he thinks that the Easter Bunny will be bringing gifts like Santa Claus. SpongeBob ties to set his friend straight, but it seems like it will be a very difficult task. When the Easter Bunny arrives, attired in his diving suit, Patrick thinks it is an invader and scares him away, only to find out later, much to his chagrin, that he has chased away the real Easter Bunny. Now there are no eggs to find for the egg hunt. SpongeBob decides to help out and colors eggs and hides them for Patrick to find. It is really interesting to see how clueless Patrick is and also how selfish, I guess the message is more about the good heartedness of SpongeBob trying to help his fiend enjoy the egg hunt, but the ending takes a slightly different twist when Patrick brings a huge egg that opens with quite an unpleasant surprise. A literary classic.

Truly, this is a book for the ages, sure to captivate the imaginations of both young and old alike. Wait, this isn't The Brothers Karamazov? In that case, this book is crap.
