Overview

The squirrels at Mt. Mercy College are getting too friendly—they're frightening the students, making the nuns jumpy . . . and they're super messy. It's time to call the Animal Rescue Team!

Meanwhile, Keisha's got a problem of her own. The Grand River Steppers jump rope team has a chance to win first place in their school district this year, but Keisha's so nervous, she keeps messing up! When she and Daddy go to the Veteran's Facility to check out their squirrel situation, Keisha meets Sergeant Pinkham, who's learning how to use his new prosthetic leg. Could Sarge be just the person to help Keisha stay calm, do well, and have fun at the competition?

Perfect for independent readers, the Animal Rescue Team books offer adventurous and heartwarming stories with lots of laughs—and plenty of critters.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Mary Hynes-Berry
Stauffacher and Lamont are steadily turning out a readable series of books that revolve around ten year old Keisha Carter's family business as wildlife rehabilitators—"Animal Rescue Team." In this case, an unwelcome invasion of squirrels on the college campus poses a problem. Keisha comes up with the idea of a Squirrel Circus that will redirect the squirrels and entertain those recuperating at the local Veteran's Hospital. This project turns out to also help Keisha with another problem she herself is struggling with—how to calm her nerves so that she does not ruin her jump rope team's chances at a state competition. This whole series is quite well written though there is no question about Stauffacher's agenda: to deliver a positive pitch for a full array of social issues, beginning with Keisha's multi-racial family. The final chapter downplays what actually happens at the competition and the Squirrel Circus to put the emphasis on Keisha's efforts and creativity in overcoming challenges.
