Overview

The fourth SWINDLE book, centering around a dog show that goes horribly awry!

The heroes of SWINDLE, ZOOBREAK, and FRAMED are back - and this time, things have gone to the dogs! When Luthor goes berserk at a mall dog show, he's accused of ruining the career of the three-time best-in-show beagle. Griffin always knew that Luthor's viciousness was simmering just below the surface - so why does he feel bad enough to spring him from the pound?

Griffin and his team have a new plan. This one involves New York City, a sinister saboteur, a reclusive dog-trainer who's quit the business, an international dog show, and a whole lot of red dye. But if they pull it off, no one will even notice their sting operation...right?

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The "Man with the Plan" is back, in the form of Griffin Bing, a young teenager who decides to rescue a Doberman named Luthor, who is in the pound and accused of injuring a show dog. Griffin's motives are good, since Luthor was framed and the dog's family, including twelve-year-old Samantha, is the victim of a misguided lawsuit. His organization and plan of action are superb. His tactics, timing, and commitment to complete honesty, however, leave something to be desired. Nevertheless, as Griffin navigates around roadblocks thrown up by his family, his friends, a reclusive dog trainer, and the show dog community, he still manages to keep his eye on the goal and deliver Luthor back into the hands of his grateful owner. This is the fourth book in the author's series chronicling the adventures of Griffin and his friends. In this one, there are a number of minor themes. One concerns the narcolepsy of Griffin's friend Ben; one is a riff about the "dog whisperer" persona; and another concerns the corrupt world of the professional dog show circuit. There are a number of ethnic characters, as well as young protagonists, male and female, who are smart and diverse in their personalities and interests. The plot moves the story along at a good pace, but the writing, unfortunately, is full of cliches and not particularly fresh. There are some lapses in the point of view, and the distinction between Luthor as a real dog and as a cartoon one is not well drawn. Nevertheless, the characters are likable, and there is no offensive language or behavior by the protagonists. Readers who have enjoyed the other books in the "Swindle "series will like this one as well. And the many references in the book to a real canine classic, Lassie Come-Home, may inspire readers to try that book as well. Reviewer: Leona Illig
School Library Journal
Gr 5–7—Former attack dog Luthor is in the brig for disrupting a dog show and injuring top contender Electra, and her owners are suing Savannah Drysdale's family for seven million dollars. Meanwhile, Savannah's friend Griffin is staying at Ben's house for a summerlong sleepover while his parents are in Europe trying to sell his dad's latest invention, the Spritz-O-Matic. Knowing Griffin, Ben's mom is sure that something will go wrong, but he has assured her that he has absolutely no "Plans." But they just have to save Luthor from the fate that befalls all dogs left at the pound, don't they? And they can't really do that without a Plan, can they? Newest in the much-loved stories about "The Man with the Plan," Showoff will please current fans and is also great as a stand-alone. Zany and full of wild, unpredictable turns, the action never stops. Hilarious moments with Luthor, a Doberman "the size of a small pony," abound. A fun read that will keep even reluctant readers immersed in the story.—Terry Ann Lawler, Phoenix Public Library, AZ
Kirkus Reviews
Intrepid man-with-a-plan Griffin is up to his old tricks in his fourth outing, accompanied by a cast of patient middle-school best friends, all on a mission to save an overly energetic dog. After Savannah's gigantic Doberman, Luthor, inexplicably trashes a public appearance by show dog Electra, resulting in an unfortunate tail injury to the valuable beagle, Electra's owner sues her family and she's forced to relinquish her beloved pet to the animal shelter. Classmates Griffin and Ben bring the dog home, which is not too difficult since Griffin's parents are touring Europe, trying to sell a quirky new invention. All the boys need to do is hide Luthor in Griffin's garage, train him, win a dog show championship and then turn the money that will pour in afterward over to Electra's owner. If this scheme sounds highly improbable, well, that's half the fun. Eventually, they end up at the world's grandest dog show, with Luthor competing for the championship--if only they can thwart the wily criminal who's trying to upset their efforts. This tale stands alone well, with marginal character development taking second place to the narrative's nearly believable twists and turns. Ample dog-show details will appeal to pet enthusiasts. A bumpy, plot-driven ride that moves along at a brisk pace, enthusiastically catapulting toward a potentially disastrous and hilarious conclusion. (Fiction. 8-12)

    Different

If you have read swindle, zoobreak, and framed you will know that its different. In all the other books griffin has a real plan that usually breaks the law, but in showoff all he does is enter a dog show and get in minor trouble. Anyways great book really good.

    ONE OF THE GREATS

Back in grade school i read gordon korman books at the school library. Those books were the highlight of my childhod, (one of the highlights anyway). Mpst of his books that i read back then are not in print at this time but hopefully will be republished in the near future. The first three books in this series were ok but this on brings back memories. It has the cassic humor, wit, suspense, and crazy, memorable characters.
Some or his classic titles are...
    Who is Buggs Potter?
    Beware the fish
    Go jump in the pool
    Loosing joe's place
    No more dead dogs
    Radio fith grade
    Something fishy at macdonald hall
    Macdonald hall goes hollywood

    ¿¿¿Long live crazy russian dude!!!

Do you really think my books are all that great? Personally I think I could have done better. As you see, I only gave it three stars. If you want some GOOD books, look up Pfeffers' "Life As We Knew It" series. I gave them favorable reveiws today.

    great

I read all of the books this year. I'd say that this one is the best of the series. I've read it, and I absolutely LOVE it! I never knew that Luthor could get into a dog show! I was amazed that Luthor didn't bite anyone! Read this book after 1-3, and you'll see how it is the best!
