Overview

Living in the small town of Heavenly, Pennsylvania, Claire Weatherly has come to admire the Amish for their wholesome, honest way of life. But she also knows that nothing is as simple as it seems—especially when murder disturbs the peace.

Claire has always been game for a good puzzle, so when she hears that Mose Fisher has made one of his famous corn mazes, she can’t wait to walk the paths and test her skill. But she’ll have a much more serious puzzle to solve when, deep inside the maze, she discovers the body of Amish dairy farmer Harley Zook.

It won’t be easy for Detective Jakob Fisher to investigate a murder on his own father’s farm—not after being shunned by the man  for leaving the Amish community and becoming a cop. With Mose himself as a suspect, and old family secrets cropping up, it’s up to Claire to help catch the killer before she finds herself at a dead end.

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC copy of this book. I really enjoyed it, it was great to be back in Heavenly again. My only problem with it (let's get it out of the way) is that I thought Jacob seemed a little laid back in the investigating, that could be just my way of looking at it, you will have to decide for yourself. Now on to the raves, the mystery was intresting and kept me guessing. It has all the characters that you love in the first books, if you are a follower of this series, if not, I believe that you will have no problem reading it as a stand alone, the characters are reintroduced so that you are not lost. Ms. Bradford has a style of writing that puts you right into the book. I can almost smell the fresh air and hear the clop of the horses hooves. I'm sure that you will enjoy this book, I know that I eagerly await the next.

Laura Bradford once again transports her readers to the heart of Amish country in her latest Amish mystery, Shunned and Dangerous. Readers who enjoy well researched mysteries will love Bradford's attention to detail and her obvious love for the Amish people. Readers will have to use all of their senses to figure out this whodunit, that pits a detective, against his Amish roots, with his father as a possible suspect. Fans of the series will be waiting to see what happens to Claire's shop, who killed Harley Zook, and if Claire and Jakob will ever acknowledge their feelings for each other. A great addition to the series! What I liked: One of the interesting things about this series, is that the heroine herself, is not Amish. Claire is a transplanted Heavenly, Pennsylvania resident. She is trying desperately to make a go of her shop in town and needs to make it able to support her before her meager savings are depleted. Now her assistant Ester is getting married and will have to stop working for her and making the high dollar items she crafts for th shop. I loved the fact that Bradford went outside of the religious order to bring us the heroine of this series, Claire is gaining a lot of understanding of the Amish people, but she still has that outsiders perspective that works so well in this series. Claire finds the body of a local Amish Dairy farmer deep in the corn maze on Mose Fishers' farm. That presents several different problems for Claire. First Mose is the father of her assistant and she is worried that he might be the best suspect. Second he is also the father of the local police detective investigating the case. The big problem is that Claire has feelings for said detective who has some issues with the Amish since he was shunned and left the faith to become a cop. The murder victim, Harley Zook encouraged Jakob and was the only Amish to support his decision, much to the rancor of his father. Bradford makes it look easy as she moves between all the characters, dropping clues and leaving red herrings for the reader. It wasn't really clear who could have done it other than Mose, or what other motive might existed for much of the book, which I thought was amazing. I definitely couldn't figure out who else it could have been for awhile. I liked the way that Jakob used Claire's help with this case. He knew the Amish people would not talk to him due to the shunning. He also was far too close to the case considering his father was the main suspect. Mose did not like Harley Zook. He blamed him for taking his son away and now his other son was gone. These two characters obviously have a thing for each other, but, don't want to admit it. It should be interesting in future books to see where this goes. What I didn't like: Jakob seemed a bit lackadaisical about the investigation. I understood that he couldn't do a lot of investigating but it seemed like he should have been a bit more adamant about what was happening. It was his father after all that was being accused of murder. It certainly didn't take away my enjoyment of the book, just a minor pet peeve. Bottom Line: This is a great addition to the series and readers are sure to find that Bradford took the time to really develop this story. She didn't leave anything to chance and kept me in the dark until close to the end. This one had an interesting plot that kept me guessing.

Shunned And Dangerous is the third book in the An Amish Mystery series. Claire is looking forward to this time of year in Heavenly, PA. He clerk, the Amish girl Esther, has been tempting her with stories of her grandfather, Mose Fisher's corn maze. As Claire is working the maze she finds an inner maze and as she is traversing that, she comes across the body of Harley Zook. Mose Fisher has always blamed Harley for convincing Jakob Fisher to leave the Amish faith, after Zook's brother was brutally murdered. Jakob has asked for Claire's help in the investigation, as he knows the Amish will be reluctant to talk with him. Plus it is doubly difficult when his own father might be the primary suspect. What Claire needs to find answers to, is why Zook would hire the son of the man that killed his brother as his apprentice. Also Claire needs to find out who has been opening the pasture gate so Zook's cow could escape and who has been painting threats on the foundation of his home. In addition Claire has a dilemma involving her little shop. Esther has become engaged to Eli and will soon be married. When she marries, she will no longer be working for Claire and also may not be providing Claire with the inventory that sells so well in the shop. Definitely waiting for the next book in this wonderful series, to see just where Claire will be going in the romance department.

What a joy it was to be back in Heavenly, Pennsylvania with Claire, Diane, Jakob, Benjamin, Esther and friends. Each time I’m blessed enough to visit, I am lulled into a sense of peace and contentment. I truly find myself wanting to stay apart of this idyllic community. Well, until there’s another body found. Oh, who am I kidding? I’d still take my chances! In this third installment of Laura Bradford’s Amish Mystery series, murder once again comes to Heavenly. This time it claims the life of Amish dairy farmer Harley Zook. But who would want Harley dead? And why? Ms. Bradford crafts an intricate tale of anger, greed, prejudice and revenge that gives the reader much to think about before she leads us to the conclusion and the surprising answers to these questions . Along with the murder mystery, readers are also treated to an uplifting story of love, friendship, helpfulness and forgiveness between characters old and new to the series. As with HEARSE AND BUGGY & ASSAULTED PRETZEL, we also get a glimpse into the world of the Amish and their traditions. It’s clear Ms. Bradford has done her research and that she has a true fondness for these people. If you haven’t read this series yet, do yourself a favorite and start it now! If you have read the first two books in this series, SHUNNED AND DANGEROUS is exactly what you've been waiting for!

Laura Bradford crafts such a great story, I am enamored with this series. At the end of the book, I was so invested in the characters, I was worried about their situation as if they were personal friends. I hope there are many more in this series because Laura always tells a great story.

I really love this series. I love the connection and relationships that she makes in this little Amish town. I had initially thought that I knew who the killer was and was blown away by who the real criminal was. I got a little annoyed about the character gasping a lot. That is the only reason behind the 4 stars other wise it would have been 5. I'm sad that I have to wait another year to continue reading this series. It is likely that I will pick this book up again and read it all over again. It is that good.

if there were more than 5 stars to give i would. there is much more tothese stories than just a mystery. there is a lot of knowledge about the Amish way of life. jakob left the order after baptism leaving him shunned and unable to intereact with his beloved family. painful for him. claire keeps trying to bring them together. jakob is a policeman in Heavenly and claire is a shopkeeper. when a much cared about Amish man is murdered, claire tries to help find the culprit. The Amish will not talk to jakob because he is shunned. claire is 'English' same as jakob. the feelings between jakob and claire are beginning to surface, and it will be an amazing romance! i've read all of this series, and love it. the characters take on a real feel and the town of Heavenly souinds like an ideal place to love, except for the murders. miss laura has an uncanny ability to describe the differences between the English and the Amish. you get finished with the story and wish you had more to read. read it, you'll love it too!!

Laura Bradford's Amish Mystery Series is truly a one of a kind. It's an absolute delight to read. She has painted a beautiful picture that vividly introduces you to the world of the Amish, bringing with that her warm, loveable characters. Her town of Heavenly is exactly that - just Heavenly. With it's picturesque scenery, and it's inviting charm, it feels as though you're navigating yourself through the streets - shopping in all of the windows, smelling the wonderful food and gazing upon some of the most beautifully hand crafted creations. These books literally transport you to a completely different place and time, and it's a ride you just have to experience to believe. In Shunned and Dangerous, Ms. Bradford takes the lives of these characters and throws them in to an entirely new league. Layer by layer, these characters grow and evolve with every twist and turn thrown at them. Claire is still her strong willed, determined self, but Jacob is clouded by the life he used to live and the one he's chosen for himself now. To watch his character try and work both sides of the murder case he's investigating is fascinating and touching. And the secondary cast of characters all play their own roles - each one making the layers of the story all the more intricately detailed. The mystery itself is wonderfully written. Pulling from both the Amish and English ways of life, it keeps you engaged, making each turn of the page all the more exciting, as you never know what's going to happen next. I must applaud Ms. Bradford for her literary talent. She puts her own signature on the cozy genre, and has a huge fan in myself. I cannot wait to travel back to Heavenly and spend more time with Claire, Jacob and the rest of the Fishers. I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. All conclusions are my own.

Claire Weatherly has been enjoying her time in Heavenly, Pennsylvania, living with her Aunt Diane and working at her new store. She has made several friends, many from the Amish community, and loves the peaceful contentment that this environment brings. However, all is not well for her, as her store has failed to bring in enough income to stay afloat. Shortly, she may have to make a decision to leave Heavenly and find another place to live and work and this has her dreading the future. In the meantime, she decides to content herself with solving the puzzle of Mose Fisher's latest corn maze. However, at the center of the difficult part of the maze, she stumbles upon the murdered body of Harley Zook, sworn enemy of Mose Fisher ever since Harley took Jacob's side in his decision to leave the Amish and join the police force. Can Claire help Jacob solve this murder, or is his father the only viable suspect? And how can she break the news of her leaving to Jacob, Benjamin, Esther and her other friends? This series contains wonderful characters and a fascinating insight into the Amish life, as well as a great mystery. I am looking forward to the next book in this series.

It is harvest time in Heavenly and Claire is excited to try out one of Mose Fisher’s famous corn mazes. Her excitement quckly turns to terror and she rounds a corner and comes face to face with a very dead Harley Zook. Harley was a local Amish dairy farmer and handyman. This investigation is going to be difficult for Detective Jakob Fisher. Mose Fisher is his father and because Jakob has been shunned by the Amish Community he has not had any recent contact with the man. When the evidence starts to point directly at Mose things get even tougher. Claire feels she has to step in and find the real killer before someone else turns up dead. Dollycas’s Thoughts Cozy mysteries are my favorites and Laura Bradford (aka Elizabeth Lynn Casey) is one of my favorite cozy authors. She is an amazing storyteller so I always know the book is going to be a great read but with this story she absolutely blew me away!! When an author writes a series each book brings a new adventure and the characters continue to evolve. This has to be extremely difficult. You have to tell the reader enough to get them engaged but you can’t “spill all the beans” too soon. In the first 2 books of this series we were introduced to Jakob Fisher and knew he had been shunned by his Amish Family. In this story Jakob takes center stage and we find out more details but also see the pain he must endure for the choice he made. Most of us know the Amish live a simple life. They do not have telephones or electricity and travel by horse and buggy. Personally there is an Amish community near here and my daughter visits often. She shops in their stores and bring me the most delicious baked goods. I have also witnessed some of their excellent building and woodworking skills. But I never really think of those that have been shunned for choices they have made. How they can forgive someone who may have committed a terrible crime against them but when a member of their family makes a choice after baptism to leave the community they cannot be forgiven. They are ex-communicated (shunned) forever. Even if they have left to protect and serve others. The way Jakob has to deal with this just breaks my heart. Claire is trying to understand the workings of the Amish too, just as I was and this really added to my relationship with this story. In addition to this character study Bradford creates an outstanding mystery that she weaves right into this heartbreaking situation. There were so many twists and turns it was hard to believe this story took place in just 288 pages. She packed the drama and emotions into this story, it left me reeling. I love my cozies and with no disrespect intended at all. This was so much more than a cozy mystery. This is a story that is going to stick with me longer than any story I have read in a long time. It was so eye-opening and thought provoking. Laura you really hit a home run with this one. You get my first Paradise rating of the year. I can’t wait to travel back to Heavenly again soon.

I love the Amish information, learning about their culture and love cozy mysteries. This series is good. What I do find that gets old is Claire gasps, threatens tears and doesn't tell the truth or keeps it to herself on almost every page. That gets old. And telling about how she loves Heavenly all the time also gets to be too much. The constant retelling gets boring. But that said, I have read 3 of these books back to back so I may be just needing a break. And they are hard to put down, as I can't wait to start the next one!

Don’t Shun This Book Claire Weatherly loves puzzles, so corn mazes are a special delight. She is really looking forward to the one put on by Mose Fisher in his corn field, and is down there on a Friday night all ready to find her way out. When she hears about a more advanced section, she quickly heads there to make it even more challenging. Unfortunately, before she can find her way out of the maze, she finds the dead body of Harley Zook. It was the murder of Harley’s brother sixteen years ago that led Detective Jakob Fisher to leave the Amish community, which resulted in his shunning. All this time, Harley had been the lone advocate for Jakob in the Amish community, which had infuriated Mose, Jakob’s father. With the close ties to the case, Jakob will have a hard time investigating it, especially when the evidence seems to point to Mose. How can Claire help him solve the case, especially when she is dealing with her own problems? Once again, the emotions of this book and these characters are front and center. It is hard not to hurt for Jakob, especially as he is forced to deal with evidence that points to a man he still loves even if they have a very complicated past and present. This is even more moving since we see everything from Claire’s third person point of view. The writing draws you in and lets you get lost in that world. That cast of characters is vivid. I never have any trouble remembering who everyone is and their relationship to each other, and I love watching those relationships grow. The new characters are just as strong, which makes it easy to care about the outcome. I did figure out the direction the plot was going early on, but I didn’t have the specifics worked out until Claire figured everything out. The climax was great, and what it revealed about the characters involved was amazing. I do have some slight issue with this book. Claire seems to be ready to cry very easily, and I did find it a bit tiring by the end. Additionally, Claire speaks her mind a little too freely about how Jakob is being treated by his family. While I happen to agree with her, she needs to come to terms with the Amish beliefs because at this point it is feeling like a recycled plot element. Then again, maybe the problem is me since I have read the first three books in the last six month and the books only take place over the course of two months. Either way, I do hope these aspects are toned down some in the next in the series. And I certainly plan to read more books in the series. I love this cast of characters, and I need to know what happens to them next. If you want to get pulled into a great story, Shunned and Dangerous is for you.
