Award winning investigative author Ian Halperin went undercover as a model himself in New York and South Beach and has found the never told story behind-the-story about the outwardly glamorous supermodel industry. He traces the rise of many well-known supermodels including Cheryl Tiegs, Claudia Schiller, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, and Kirsty Hume, and the controversial obstacles that they have faced along the way. Halperin interviewed over 200 models, their close business and personal associates, and people in the fashion industry to get the inside story. He reveals how they are often misled by their handlers into a world of drugs, prostitution, violence, murder, and never-ending, messy affairs. Halperin's probe exposes a disturbing pattern in which young women and men prove ill-equipped to handle their dizzying ascension to stardom at such a young age and eventually wind up broke and outcast.

Shut Up And Smile shifts effortlessly back and forth in time. From the early days of modeling till present, Halperin provides a satisfying and savory look throught the eyes and hearts of the top supermodels. Through his experience as an undercover model he become even more sensitive to the air around the modeling industry. Halperin knows all aspects of the seedy modeling industry, how it behaves in sorrow and joy. He weaves a story that holds the reader's attention to the book's last paragraph, sometimes with an unpleasant shock, sometimes with sympathetic understanding. Well-drawn and engrossing. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

This book is a must for any fashion fan. The modeling industry is corrupt and the author goes underground to show how corrupt it really is. A very fair and accurate portrayal. Any model, designer, agent or fashion fan should pick up a copy. A lot is to be learned. It's amazing how much drugs, sexual abuse and racism exist in this business. Kudos to the author for being so brave. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback. Report this reviewThank you, this review has been flagged.

Anyone with more than a passing interest in the inner industry will be amazed by the inner working of the fashion industry and the juicy stories the author has to tell. This a no-holds barred book and strips away the impenetrable sheen of some of fashion's biggest names, like Casablancas and Evangelista. The author's story about posing undercover as a model is incredible...an expert storytelling expose about fashion's long coveted secret. I couldn't put it down. Was this review helpful?
