Overview

Led by alluring singer Carol C., this Brooklyn-bred outfit blends styles better than a Cuisinart chops veggies. On their debut album, Si-Sé flaunt both their DJ techniques and full-band live instrumentation atop a sumptuous urban backdrop woven of electronic atmospherics, drum-'n'-bass beats, pan-Latin rhythms, and soulful vocals. Carol C.'s delivery is silken and street-slick, yet positively earthy. And never mind her English-Spanish bilingualism -- her way of flowing back and forth is natural enough to make lingual distinctions wonderfully irrelevant. Oran "Juice" Jones's old-school romantic requiem "The Rain" gets a tasty, quiet-fire remake, as Carol C. slowly builds her luscious lament over spacious Fender Rhodes piano and dancehall-type beats that burgeon with sexuality, threatening to burst at any moment. Echoing guitar, viola, and bass give the pleading "I Want You To..." a psychedelic lift, while "Biscocho Amargo" sounds like Digable Planets wandering into a rural Venezuelan village. Delectable from start to finish, Si-Sé is easily one of the most organic vocals-and-beats offerings to emerge at the onset of the 21st century.

Editorial Reviews

CMJ New Music Report
Si-Sé elegantly combines downtown rhythms and underground grooves with Spanish Harlem's magical realism.
Billboard
The perfect summer soundtrack . . . will surely please those who admire such artists as Sade, Bebel Gilberto, Everything But the Girl, Natacha Atlas, Soulstice and The Angel.
Paper
What a hot, wet American record . . . straddles the line between merely romantic and overtly sexual, understated Latin rhythms and subtle percussion simmering beneath production values so lush you want to pull the violas out of the air and stroke them.
Urban Latino
Sade, Prince and Lauryn Hill fans listen up: Si-Sé is about to set it off.
