Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Vicki Foote
Sid is excited as he talks about how he and his dad are doing something "extra cool" after school. They're planting a tree, and Sid will get to play in the dirt. At breakfast, Sid asks his mom about dirt. She looks it up on the computer and shows him the different kinds of dirt. At school, he asks his friends what they think is found in dirt. They tell him that they have found worms and rocks. He tells his teacher that he's going to plant a tree because it's Earth Day. Teacher Susie has the class look for all the kinds of things that they can find in soil. They have a birthday party for Earth, and then Sid and his dad plant the tree. There are some "earthy" jokes on the last page. The book has simple sentences for beginning readers, and is part of the "I Can Read" series. Children will enjoy the lively and colorful illustrations based on the characters in the television show. The content provides some basic science facts incorporated into Sid's fun day. The short text is a good resource for children who are beginning to read complete sentences on their own, and they should enjoy the cute characters and story. Reviewer: Vicki Foote
