All Music Guide - Steve Leggett
Ray Price and Faron Young have had parallel careers in many ways. Both started out as hard honky tonk singers, but blessed with strong, everyman vocal styles, they switched over to mellower material and a Nashville pop veneer as time went on, and both have had their biggest hits with syrupy, string-laden crossover ballads. This set pairs them together, and is essentially a reissue of 1992's The Memories That Last with a pair of bonus tracks by each singer thrown in to complete the deal. It's a rather turgid affair, full of big, slow ballads that are big on sincerity but pretty low on energy, even though some of Nashville's best session players like Clinton Gregory on fiddle, Buddy Emmons on steel guitar, Jimmy Capps on guitar, and Blondie Calderon on vibraphone are aboard. It's all done very smoothly and professionally, but nothing really catches fire, although it's always nice to hear classics like Hank Williams' "Cold, Cold Heart" and "Mansion on the Hill" and Willie Nelson's "Funny How Time Slips Away" done by veteran country crooners like these two, but that's not enough to make this anything more than a die-hard fan purchase.
